Hey guys! Was wondering how many people cut the guts out of there thermostat?? I've been running 6 years now and I've always cut the guts out. Seems like every 3 minutes into the fig 8 race my car is overheating with steam. I know 440s love heat so I keep running hard but,is it a good idea to cut the guts out or should I leave them in. Also I run straight water in my radiator. How does everyone else run? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes I have a electric fan I use due to not having much room for the stock or a plastic fan on pull. I just have 1 fan. Should u try a dual fan

I would gut them if you only run water as it will corode closed over winter, so will the waterpump imo. I've never noticed a difference with a new 180 or a gutted thermostat in derby cars. I would run a 3 core alluminum rad with a 20+ lbs cap, 50/50 antifreeze with watter wetter, a shroud and a solid nylon race fan, run fuel line through an ice bath, have large hood opening to let heat out and have a carb spacer and elevated aircleaner to get cool air and an alluminum intake helps too.header wraps can help. I've never used an aftermarket waterpump. Definitely run a tranny cooler separate from the radiator. Wouldnt an oil cooler be great if we could lol

I think he has more problems getting hot that fast than just adding water wetter or soap to the water. What the problem is I'm not sure. Does your water pump turn? Shaft might turn but impeller might not, you can check by running it with the radiator cap off and see if the water is moving.

Aluminum radiator, good water pump, fan with a good shroud that pushes alot of air and a good tuning job should help alot.
