Is the gear box area the same as the transmission tunnel? What is a gear box area?

I was assuming he was discussing the steering gearbox. Hopefully not the tranny tunnel because then that's going to be 2 spots on this frame I have to modify to make reliable.

A gear box is a term for a manual transmission that is typically only used overseas. I have never heard anyone refer to anything on a derby car as a gearbox. You will definitely need a different steering box along with likely some of the suspension components. Im sure that left spindle is nice and crispy. Personally, I wouldn't run the car. But don't let me discourage you. If you want to build it, give it hell. I know some people have had good luck with them. For a bone stock show it will bend in front of the a arms pretty quick. How much quicker on a rusty, burnt, improperly heat treated frame, I have no idea. I would run the Poncho first, and save the steering box and whatever else to use on the olds if you decide to run it. Of course this is just my opinion, I am not an expert on anything including burnt up midsize GMs.

I understood it as steering box, and thanks for the input Stromi, you havent duscouraged me. I've only ran 1 other midsize GM (77 4dr Malibu) and it did quite well for a stock build. I've been nervous of the metric GMs because I've ran 3 (77 Rivy, 80 square back, 81 Olds 88) and they all had hump problems.
The old iron is running out and don't want to use them for low paying local shows and stock shows.

Yea, steering gear box... If you thought I meant transmission, maybe you should brush up on your context clues. :-)

In mechanics terms, a gearbox can be two things on a vehicle. Either the steering gearbox, or the manual trans gearbox.

Ive been a mechanic 30 years and I have never heard anyone refer to a steering box as a gear box. Maybe its a geographical thing. IDK
I searched google, yahoo, bing, and websters dictionary for the word gearbox. And I never seen the word "steering" mentioned.
Doesn't matter anyways. I was just splitting hairs unnecessarily over misuse of a word for no real reason. Regardless what you choose to call the steering box, that one is definitely cooked well done.
