IMO they are decent stock cars. Certainly not as good as their bigger brothers(impalas, 225s, 98s etc). However the way the sport has evolved, whether or not a car is any good depends greatly on your rules. They are definitely not horrible but need a certain rule set to shine.

With DI rules where you get a plate A Arms forward a DP and hump plates, they'd be pretty stout.

IMO they aren't as hard as some of the big GMs, but I'd feel confident taking one back to back with a chevy of the same years...not so much a buick/olds.
As far as the front goes, anything you can do to them helps, but fix one probem, create another. They really aren't a bad car, but the rules would definitely determine on where it would run.

Hit square with front. Passenger side front frame rail has a pocket/dent on inside of frame rail for the radiator hose. Maybe if you could get a small portapower down the frame and press it out it would help. I ran a 76 monte limited weld show no frame welding hardnosed bumber after i cut 3in off front rails

The term '70s Monte Carlos covers 3 generations of Montes that are all quite different.... the best would be '74-'77... then '71-'73.... then, IMO '78 and '79 and I wouldn't even derby a first gen '70, but then again, I know nothing about those..

I don't know what I was thinking, but I will stand by my original statement saying '74-'77 (preferring '74 and '75) are the best and not knowing anything about first gens (including years of production).
