I have a mopar 440. Has points distributor. Flipped switch to start it. I have spark. Its getting fuel. It will not fire. All it does is crank over continuosly and causes flames to shoot out of stacks.plug wires are in correct firing order. Need help.. is my distributor 180 off? Timing. I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated

Sounds like you're firing right in between the combustion and exhaust strokes. I'd try advancing the timing.

Big block distributors rotate counter clockwise, small blocks turn clockwise. Big block and small block distributors use the same cap if you have a small block distributor cap on a big bloc dist. the number 1 will be in the wrong spot and the rotation arrow will be in the wrong direction. this used to cause me a @#$#$% load of frustration.

Okay. So I have set points. Tried advancing the distributor. Did not work. Set motor TDC. Rotor faces #1 plug wire. Still not starting. Cranks over strong. Trying to start. Looks like fireworks coming out of stacks follwed my flames. But still won't start.180 off?. I'm going to switch back to old distributor cap again and see if it works. Could be wrong cap.. ill let u guys know what I find out. Any other ideas?

It will take literally uno minuto to pull the distributor turn the shaft 180 and set it back in! Had that happen to me a few times. You swear you put it back in right but be damned that it isn't 180 off!

Update on car. Re checked wiring timed .compression good. Came down to my starter had enough power to turn it over. But starter was bad. Replace with new starter. And she runs loud and proud. Now my next question 71 newport had a 383 in it originally. Put my 440 in the car. I can turn the car all the way left. And half way right. Idler arm is hitting oil pan. Nothing looks bent or out of wack. Why won't it clear. What can I do to get it to clear the pan. Is there another longer idler arm I can get or any suggestions. Thanks for all ur guys help
