Miami County 4H Fair General Rules

These rules are developed with cost of car construction in mind. That being said, there is always ones that spend more than others. Cars constructed to rules should be competitive. Cars are to be built to rules or not run. If certain items are not specified, it doesn't mean it's legal. The official decision will be final, so call if there is something you are not clear on.
All vehicles must be at fairgrounds to be inspected 1 hour before show time. Any cars arriving late will not be eligible to compete unless prior arrangements have been made. This shouldn't be a problem since I'm not running.
Entry fee is non refundable, so if you can't make your vehicles legal then you will lose your money.
Only registered drivers allowed in inspection lane. Your vehicle must be inspected before you can run. After the derby is over and if you feel a winner is not legal, a driver can protest by paying a hundred dollar protest fee. If a vehicle is deemed illegal, protesting driver gets money back and the illegal driver is disqualified. If the protested car is deemed legal, protested vehicle gets money. Must be initiated within ten minutes of the class event being finished
Only officials, protesting driver, protested driver allowed during reinspection.
No alcohol or drugs on grounds. If caught, disqualified and possibly arrested. Pit crew included.
No hot rodding in the pits, keep at idle. Be safe. If you are caught purposely tearing up the grass you will be told to leave by the fair board.
Officials’ decisions are final.
No unsportsmanlike conduct will be tolerated.
Vehicles must be removed from the fairgrounds by noon Sunday.
No one on track except drivers (exception for the power wheel event). Could result in disqualification and forfiture of any prize money.
Drivers must be 18 years of age. Ages 14-17 must have notarized permission slip from parent or guardian, valid i.d. required (Exception power wheels no one older than 10)
All drivers must fill out insurance form and entry form to participate. Entry fee is non-refundable.
We want to keep this event safe and fun.
Remember that kids are in the stand and pits, conduct yourself accordingly. Please keep an eye on kids in pits especially.
GENERAL SAFETY RULES
Drivers must wear helmets, eye protection, helmets, long sleeve shirts, pants (No shorts, legs get burnt) regular shoes (no sandals, flip flops, etc) gloves and fire suit are recommended.
All drivers must attend drivers meeting. Drivers and riders must wear safety belts.
Don't hit drivers’ door or passenger door if passenger present. Accidents happen, but if careless or intentional, you're out.
Don't get out of the vehicle in the arena unless told to by an official.
Pay attention to flagmen when participating. Flags green-go, red-stop, black-disqualified, checker- winner winner chicken dinner.
Allowed 1 fire restart if deemed safe by officials. Second fire you're out
If vehicle appears to be at risk of injury to driver, spectator, or officials, you may be disqualified example open door, loose battery, loose gas tank, fuel leak, etc. Make sure gas tank gas lines, battery, are secure and safe. If not you wont run.
Brakes must work.
No sandbagging or holding.
You are given 30 seconds for aggressive hits, one minute for restarts, one minute if you're hung up. Flagmen decision is final.
Try to keep drivers compartment free of jagged objects.
Keep hands, arms, head etc inside vehicle at all times.
Miami Co Metal Mash
FULL SIZE CAR BUILD RULES
Any year American made sedan or station wagon can be run except no 4x4s ambulances, hearses, trucks, limos, imperials, el caminos, etc.
BODY
1. Remove all glass, mirrors, plastic, chrome and interior before arriving at the derby, vehicles must be swept clean.
2. Both front doors must be painted white with large numbers. Roof signs recommended
3. Passengers allowed but only with cage. Hand hold of some type for passengers recommended
4. You may have a 4 point halo cage with rear roll bar. Front down bars must go to sheet metal and cannot be above the frame front box, but rear can go to frame if roll bar included (to frame rail only, not box). 3"x3'' max size for cage material ( 2” minimum). Dash bar must be above steering column and at least 6'' away from firewall and/or distributor protector. NO door bars farther forward than inside door seam. No kickers. Gas tank protectors are ok but must be 6'' from rear firewall. Bars in doors ok unless officials feel you are reinforcing the vehicle
5. No wedging or sedagons. Can crease quarters and fenders but must maintain original height.
6. Hood must be 100% stock location and open for inspection. A 12 in. hole must be cut in hood above carb. Hood and trunk inspection hole sheet metal may be bolted together with maximum 3/8 bolts to prevent floppy metal (max 10 per hole)
7. Hood can be secure in 6 places. All thread may be used at core support. (Max 3/4 in.)
8. May be 4 places of wire from core support to front bumper.
9. Rust repair on bodies and frame subject to officials approval. Body panels must remain stock layers and thickness
10. No internal bracing of body. No bars in rear window.
11. Must have strap, wire, rod, etc. from cowl to roof. Must be outside distributor protector. Must not be for reinforcement.
12. No interior seam welding of body. Station wagon decking must be removed.
13. You may cut wheel wells for clearance. You may add up to 6-3/8 bolts and washers above wheel wells.
14. Drivers door may be welded solid. Remaining doors/tailgate may be welded with 5 on 5 off vertical seems only or you can wire or chain doors in at least 2 places vertical seam.
15. Trunk lid must open for inspection. After inspection you may remove, tuck, cut in half, or V in center but not to be closer than 12 inches from trunk door. Prerans must have minimal 12 in. hole for inspection. Also can be wired in 6 places body to body.
16. All body bolts allowed to be changed (1/2 inch max with 3x3 washer). Must maintain a 3/4” gap between body and frame. 4 in trunk (5/8 bolt with 3x3 washer) and 2 in core support 3/4 all thread and run up through the hood. Hood and trunk may be attached sheet metal to sheet metal only except core supports.
17. No welding body to frame.
18. Seat must stay in stock location.
FRAME-CHASSIS
19. Remove any trailer hitches
20. Allow 2 - 4''x6'' patches on fresh cars. 4 total on pre ran. If you want to move a patch that was put on fresh you have to cut the old patch off completely. If front is damaged badly you can reclip the car with a clip for that car (no interchanging year, make, or model. Call if unsure) you can only butt weld the new clip on. If a patch is used it will count as one of the 4 allowed.
21. No material may be added to frame such as metal, wood, or concrete.
22. No seam welding. No altering, shaping frame, or tilting. No painting or undercoating anywhere on frame. All factory frame holes must remain open. Shorting frame allowed in front of stock core support location only.
23. May have 3 in. by 22 in. by 1/4 in. hump plates, center of hump only.
24. May modify stock steering column to prevent loss of steering i.e u joint instead of rag joint.
25. No altering a-arms, tie rods, or ball joints trailing arms must remain stock. No solid suspension.
26. You may wire rear coil springs to rear end and frame.
27. You may wire or chain rear end to frame in 2 places. Must be able to bounce.
28. Suspension must be stock you can use spring spacers (twist in kind) or one ½” bolt to bolt down each a arm. No converting coil to leaf springs and no adding leafs on top of main leaf. Stock number of leafs.
29. Reserve right to drill or cut frame to make sure not doubled or loaded.
30. May change bumper but must be car bumper. Must use stock skin and back, but can put whatever inside. This is to keep from buying expensive right year bumpers and also to make them so you can reuse them. No complete homemade especially pointys.
31. You may weld bumper shock to bumper, and weld bumper shock to frame no farther back than 6 inches with no added metal. No seam welds on frame. You may fold edge of bumper around. No sharp edges.
32. No bending of frame front or back period
33. May notch frame rail anywhere behind humps
34. No studded tires, solid tires, wheel weights, paddle tires, screws holding in tires, bead locks, or tire protectors. Valve stem protectors allowed but must be secure
ENGINE/FUEL/DRIVETRAIN
35. Radiator must stay in stock location. No radiator protectors. No additional coolant supplies.
36. Original gas tank must be removed. You must use a boat tank or well-made fuel cell and it must be properly secured and covered. No gas cans. Plastic tanks must be covered with a metal shield. Fuel line must be secured and routed properly and safely. Keep away from exhaust. Place fuel cell behind seat preferably in center of rear seat area. High pressure fuel line recommended. If electric fuel pump used, switch must be clearly marked.
37. Batteries must be moved to passenger floorboards close to transmission hump. It must be properly secured and covered. Recommended homemade box, old car rim, etc to protect and secure battery. You may have 2 batteries. Make sure battery stay secure and will withstand hits.
38. You may use engine and trans of choice.
39. Headers are allowed but must point up or down.
40. Distributor protectors allowed but only if firewall and dash area are completely cut out to clear protector. No bar from cage to protector.
41. Engine cradle allowed but only with stock lower mounts. No pulley protectors. Chain for motor is ok but must be bolted or only 2 links welded to frame not too strengthen frame.
42. No transmission protectors.
43. Rear trans mount must be stock type. Cross member can be mounted to frame with 4" long 2"x2" angle.
44. No sliders. Must be stock slip yoke type driveshaft
45. Floor shifters are ok as long as they are not reinforcing floor
GUT N GO / YOUTH CLASS RULES
Youth class will have 105 inch wheelbase limit and no mini vans
1. Type of vehicles. 80 and newer, fwd, vehicle with 4 or 6 cylinder only. No motor swaps.
2. Strip all glass and flammable material. Dash may stay in car.
3. Gas tank must be moved to back seat and must be covered. Boat or custom tank recommended. If fuel tank is factory mounted in front of rear axle, it may be left in stock position. Electric fuel pump (on/off) switch must be clearly marked if not controlled by key.
4. Drivers door may be welded solid. All other doors must be 5 on 5 off on vertical seam or wired or chained. Driver door plates are allowed.
5. Hood, trunk lid, hatch, or gate may be wired or chained shut in 6 places.
6. Must be 12 '' hole in hood
7. Must run factory drivetrain.
8. Tires must be d.o.t. no solid or paddle tires.
9. No welding on frame anywhere.
10. Factory car bumpers, you may interchange bumpers 80 and newer if they will bolt in factory location. You may 9 wire bumper to body.
11. You may add 4 bar halo cage. A rollover bar may be extended off the halo with down bar to sheet metal only. 3x3 maximum cage material.
12. Suspension must remain all factory. Do not touch.
13. Must have safety strap or bar in front windshield. Battery must be moved to passenger floorboard and covered and secured and protected
14. Paint doors white with contrasting number. Roof sign recommended
15. Pre ran gut and go cars can be repaired with 9 wire only.
16. No passengers
This class is for learning and fun and a cheap build. Rules listed above are what you are allowed to do. Don't spend time doing more. Official’s decisions are final. All safety rules apply.
TRUCKS
BODY
1. Any year half ton or 3/4 ton truck or SUV can be ran either 2 or 4 wheel drive models. 4wd will be only allowed to run 1 driveshaft. Suburban can't be smashed down.
2. All trucks must have numbers on both doors in contrasting colors. Roof signs highly suggested.
3. All glass headlights taillights outside metal moldings and interior must be removed before reaching track. Trucks must be swept clean including drivers compartment and bed.
4. A minimum of 1 vertical safety wire, bar, or chain must be in windshield area sheet metal to sheet metal only.
5. Trucks must have approved seatbelts and must be worn at all times during event even after truck is out.
6. Doors must be welded, chained, bolted, wired or any safe combination. Straps for door seams 3'' max.
7. A four sided driver protection cage is mandatory. 5'' maximum (2” minimum) size cages. Must not extend more than 6'' in front of doors and may extend behind cab 8'' to mount rollover bar. This applies to suburbans also. Legs may go to frame. This is for safety purpose only, not to strengthen truck. Mandatory rollover bar. Gas tank protector must not go past 24'' from front of bed.
8. Bed may have additional washers and 3/4 in max bolt or all thread (not welded) 3'' maximum above floor of bed and in upper flange of frame 4 additional bolts in bed floor. Rubber mounts may be removed. Factory bed floors only. Bed may be welded to cab on sides (6'' strap) only or wired with 4 spots of 9 wire double stranded also may be bolted through back of cab. Tailgate may be welded on with a maximum of 3 '' angle and may be dropped below frame tailgate may be bolted to bumper with up to 2 bolts. Bedsides must remain upright.
9. Cab mount spacers may be removed cab may be wired or bolted to frame with 4 extra bolts and washers 3/4'' max size bolt or all thread with driver safety in mind.
10. Hoods must have 12'' hole over carb, factory hood hinge bolts may be replaced with up to 3/8'' bolts. Hood may be wired or bolted shut with up to 6 bolts. Washers must be welded to all wire or bolt holes in hood and fenders.
11. Inner fenders may be wired to the frame but not bolted or welded. Each wheel opening may be bolted with up to 6 maximum 3/8'' Bolts and washers
12. No inner body bracing or bars or plate. Body panels must remain stock layers and thickness
FRAME
13. Truck bumper or car bumper, no homemade bumpers, no pointy bumpers. Loaded bumpers allowed inside of stock skin. Front and back bumpers may be welded on and may be chained or wired with a maximum of 4 short pieces between bumper and frame. Steel may be added to allow mounting of front bumper but may not extend past back edge of core support or 6'' of frame. No bumper shocks. Maximum distance of front bumper to ground 26'' rear bumper minimum of 16'' to ground.
14. All frames must remain OEM stock. Factory core support must not move. Do not add cable, wire, chain, fillers, welds or added reinforcements inside or outside of frame. Patch plate on preran only max 4 plates no large than 4''x6''.
15. Suspension must remain same type as factory stock (no coil to leave conversion) Stock leaf count and position.
16. 2wd trucks can have bolted down a-arms. You may not weld suspension components such as upper and lower control arms or leaf springs. Rear coil spring may be clamped in place. The maximum number of leaf springs in any truck will be 4 in front 10 in rear. You may add 2 clamps per spring pack in front and 4 clamps per spring pack in rear. Clamp size is 2''x4'' with 3/8'' bolts
17. Trailer hitches must be removed.
18. Any type rear end (maximum 8 lugs) may be used in any truck.
19. No solid or paddle tires. No stud’s screws wheel weights bead locks or split rims. Valve stem protectors are allowed.
ENGINE/FUEL/DRIVETRAIN
20. Engine and Trans of choice allowed. Must be located in stock location
21. Battery/batteries must be relocated to front floorboard and securely fastened and covered.
22. Original fuel tank must be removed and a steel tank or fuel cell must be mounted on front center of bed area securely bolted in place and covered. Fuel lines may be metal or rubber. Rubber lines inside cab should be hose inside of hose. Electric fuel pumps must have clearly marked shutoff switch within reach of driver.
23 Distributor protectors are allowed. Engine cradles are allowed. No pulley protectors. Chained welded or homemade mounts must meet approval of the officials.
24. Exhaust must be straight up or straight down or exit behind the rear of cab
25. Radiators must stay in stock location, no reserve tanks, radiator overflow must be directed toward the ground. No aftermarket radi barrels or steel tanks serving as radiators. If you run a radiator it must be stock type.
26. Transmission coolers are permitted.

11. You may add 4 bar halo cage. A rollover bar may be extended off the halo with down bar to sheet metal only. 3x3 maximum cage material.
12. Suspension must remain all factory. Do not touch.
13. Must have safety strap or bar in front windshield. Battery must be moved to passenger floorboard and covered and secured and protected
14. Paint doors white with contrasting number. Roof sign recommended
15. Pre ran gut and go cars can be repaired with 9 wire only.
16. No passengers
This class is for learning and fun and a cheap build. Rules listed above are what you are allowed to do. Don't spend time doing more. Official’s decisions are final. All safety rules apply.
TRUCKS
BODY
1. Any year half ton or 3/4 ton truck or SUV can be ran either 2 or 4 wheel drive models. 4wd will be only allowed to run 1 driveshaft. Suburban can't be smashed down.
2. All trucks must have numbers on both doors in contrasting colors. Roof signs highly suggested.
3. All glass headlights taillights outside metal moldings and interior must be removed before reaching track. Trucks must be swept clean including drivers compartment and bed.
4. A minimum of 1 vertical safety wire, bar, or chain must be in windshield area sheet metal to sheet metal only.
5. Trucks must have approved seatbelts and must be worn at all times during event even after truck is out.
6. Doors must be welded, chained, bolted, wired or any safe combination. Straps for door seams 3'' max.
7. A four sided driver protection cage is mandatory. 5'' maximum (2” minimum) size cages. Must not extend more than 6'' in front of doors and may extend behind cab 8'' to mount rollover bar. This applies to suburbans also. Legs may go to frame. This is for safety purpose only, not to strengthen truck. Mandatory rollover bar. Gas tank protector must not go past 24'' from front of bed.
8. Bed may have additional washers and 3/4 in max bolt or all thread (not welded) 3'' maximum above floor of bed and in upper flange of frame 4 additional bolts in bed floor. Rubber mounts may be removed. Factory bed floors only. Bed may be welded to cab on sides (6'' strap) only or wired with 4 spots of 9 wire double stranded also may be bolted through back of cab. Tailgate may be welded on with a maximum of 3 '' angle and may be dropped below frame tailgate may be bolted to bumper with up to 2 bolts. Bedsides must remain upright.
9. Cab mount spacers may be removed cab may be wired or bolted to frame with 4 extra bolts and washers 3/4'' max size bolt or all thread with driver safety in mind.
10. Hoods must have 12'' hole over carb, factory hood hinge bolts may be replaced with up to 3/8'' bolts. Hood may be wired or bolted shut with up to 6 bolts. Washers must be welded to all wire or bolt holes in hood and fenders.
11. Inner fenders may be wired to the frame but not bolted or welded. Each wheel opening may be bolted with up to 6 maximum 3/8'' Bolts and washers
12. No inner body bracing or bars or plate. Body panels must remain stock layers and thickness
FRAME
13. Truck bumper or car bumper, no homemade bumpers, no pointy bumpers. Loaded bumpers allowed inside of stock skin. Front and back bumpers may be welded on and may be chained or wired with a maximum of 4 short pieces between bumper and frame. Steel may be added to allow mounting of front bumper but may not extend past back edge of core support or 6'' of frame. No bumper shocks. Maximum distance of front bumper to ground 26'' rear bumper minimum of 16'' to ground.
14. All frames must remain OEM stock. Factory core support must not move. Do not add cable, wire, chain, fillers, welds or added reinforcements inside or outside of frame. Patch plate on preran only max 4 plates no large than 4''x6''.
15. Suspension must remain same type as factory stock (no coil to leave conversion) Stock leaf count and position.
16. 2wd trucks can have bolted down a-arms. You may not weld suspension components such as upper and lower control arms or leaf springs. Rear coil spring may be clamped in place. The maximum number of leaf springs in any truck will be 4 in front 10 in rear. You may add 2 clamps per spring pack in front and 4 clamps per spring pack in rear. Clamp size is 2''x4'' with 3/8'' bolts
17. Trailer hitches must be removed.
18. Any type rear end (maximum 8 lugs) may be used in any truck.
19. No solid or paddle tires. No stud’s screws wheel weights bead locks or split rims. Valve stem protectors are allowed.
ENGINE/FUEL/DRIVETRAIN
20. Engine and Trans of choice allowed. Must be located in stock location
21. Battery/batteries must be relocated to front floorboard and securely fastened and covered.
22. Original fuel tank must be removed and a steel tank or fuel cell must be mounted on front center of bed area securely bolted in place and covered. Fuel lines may be metal or rubber. Rubber lines inside cab should be hose inside of hose. Electric fuel pumps must have clearly marked shutoff switch within reach of driver.
23 Distributor protectors are allowed. Engine cradles are allowed. No pulley protectors. Chained welded or homemade mounts must meet approval of the officials.
24. Exhaust must be straight up or straight down or exit behind the rear of cab
25. Radiators must stay in stock location, no reserve tanks, radiator overflow must be directed toward the ground. No aftermarket radi barrels or steel tanks serving as radiators. If you run a radiator it must be stock type.
26. Transmission coolers are permitted.
