So i got a bumper of a 77 Lincoln Continental for cheap. looking to put it on a w-body. Are these pretty strong or should i just use the skin and make a home made one? Ive heard some say whey are strong even though its aluminum. All input is appreciated.

If the backing is aluminum, how are you going to weld it on?

Find a steel backed bumper or make your own. I wouldn't waste a drop of sweat on an aluminum backed bumper except in replacing it with a steel bumper.

The 70s ford aluminum bumpers have very thick aluminum backing. I have heard of others getting 1 run out of them before they begin to shatter. Yes keep in mind that it IS aluminum, so it will crack and break apart, instead of bend like a steel bumper. This gives you a higher risk of broken pieces stabbing through your frontend into the radiator.
For a simple bonestock compact derby, it may last the derby. But if you want something for hard hits and continued use...you will need a steel backed bumper.
