I was replacing a bent axle yesterday on a 10 bolts C-clip and I was wondering what would I have done if the axle was snapped. I've replaced a couple of bent axles/flanges and the only time I've broken an axle (knocking on wood), it was on a "one and done" stock 80's Ford rearend and it wasn't worth replacing it and I scrapped the car.
My question is, how are you guys pulling the broken part of the axle? Do you pull the other axle and push it from the other side? Do you use a strong magnet?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I though I could ask before it happens at the track!
Thanks!

On a c clip you have to pull the cover and the pin..... Then the c clips and the opposite axle and beat it through...... With a bia and spool you just pull the other axle and knock it through. Bia is better but I've ran both

depends where they snap, if it's at the flange, just outside of the bearing where most do from actual hits, you can pull the cover, pull the pin, push the axle in to get the C clip out and then pry it back out from in the center of the carrier, usually you can get enough pry angle on it that enough is pushed out of the tube and you can get a hand on it or a vise grip on it to pull it out... no need to pull the other axle.
if it breaks in the housing by the carrier / side gear, usually towards the end of the splines which they do from power shifting, or shifting with out braking etc., then got to pull cover, pull in, hope that you can get enough pry or find and arrangement of items to get enough pry, like placing a nut against the axle and keep prying it towards the tube from the carrier and side gear. Once out of the side gear, and you'll know when it is, long telescoping magnet to get it up to the bearing and then it should slide right out because that portion of the axle is a bit smaller than bearing ID
on the rare occasion may have to pull opposite axle

Thanks to both of you for the reply. I hope I won't have to replace one soon, but I feel that I already push my luck pretty far!
Thanks!

Only ever bent the 12s broke only a couple of 28 spline at the splines years ago before ditching them and going to 31 spline 12 bolt axles and now have been 66-33 split on those, 2 have been at the flanges, only 1 a the splines and boy that one was fun getting out, it cracked back towards the splines and sprung open a little bit so didn't want to slide out of the side gear, I know that one was from me getting impatient and frustrated and doing a bit of reverse to drive without any lifting. quite amazing really what a stock axle will take, I've pulled 12 bolts out that looked like bent noodles

^ only bad part about full floaters...but If it's a BIA I take both axels out take the cover off to drain the gear lube(gets most of the metal shavings out to keep from tearing the gear up) I put a sock over a piece of 3/4 or so round bar and tap it out from the other side.
