i put a points dist and a two bbl on an 85 302 and the only coil i have right now is for my 318 points setup. i have already eliminated the starter solenoid and ran a push button for the starter but the three wire points system should be the same setup between ford, mopar, and chevy as long as the coil is putting twelve volts to the distributor the make of the coil itself shouldnt matter right? i know mopars need the ballast resistor or the coils will burn with the toggle switch setup. im wondering if the mopar coil and resistor will work with the ford distributor as long as they are both for points systems or do i need a ford coil?

back when i ran points i never knew if you could tell them apart, there was a pile of coils on the shelf and i would just grab one. never ran resistors either, but not gonna open that can of worms. you should be good to go.

thats what i thought. i couldnt get the car to fire the other night and was suspecting my switch more than the coil but i wanted to be sure. its been snowing since here so i havent been able to try it again. i have had the opposite luck with resistors on mopars engines and i have burned up two brand new coils without that stupid f@$%ing resistor so i make sure to put one on every system i switch to points unless its hei. i like different engines from ford gm and mopar so what i throw in a car really depends mostly on what i have on hand that will fit best in what ever style of car im building and in this case the stock 302 in this merc runs really really well so i wanted to convert it and keep it around for other cars in the future after the car is toast.
