Seen it both ways. I'd imagine the crank spacer being the better of the 2 but haven't heard or seen anything go wrong with spacers between the converter and flywheel though either.

I know nothing about Ford trans except there's a C4 n a C6, lol but on the GM side there's 3 bolt convertors and 6 bolt. I'd imagine over time and stress the 3 bolts would maybe warp the flywheel?? Dunno but sounds like it could happen.
With a crank spacer it mounts the flywheel right up flat to the convertor like the factory.

I run 3 spacers between the converter and flexplate. Then a crank spacer between the end of the crank and the converter on my gms

You could get nerat or a machine shop to make you one.

You could get nerat or a machine shop to make you one. A good machine shop could make one no problem. I had a shop machine an Oliver tractor flywheel to bolt to a Ford 2.3 crank. Anythings possible with the right measurements.

Where does the starter bolt? if it bolts to the bell housing it will be easier to space between the crank and flywheel. Gm almost all bolt to block making it easier to space between the flywheel and converter.

Either way you are going to need some type of a crank spacer to keep everything properly supported and centered.
