How much can timing be changed by just turning cam to advance or retard timing?

Cam advance and retard is not the same as ignition timing. Regardless of cam timing, ignition timing is still set the same. The advancing or retarding of a cam changes the valve events. It basically moves the torque curve of the engine, advance gives you more bottom end and retard gives more top end.
