The problem is when your alternator belt and your water pump belt use the same pulleys and you throw an alternator belt which then takes out your water pump belt, that's when an alternator can cost you a race or an engine. One less mechanical device made by man that is has been taken out of the loop that can fail and cost you a derby. JMO.

I've always ran an alternator. now days I just run a Wilson one with good pullies and they don't throw. regardless of whether or not I lose a belt I ALWAYS charge the battery the day of the show. just a pet peeve of mine. I've ran an electric fuel pump, trans fan, and electric fan on the radiator without an issue... but my engines usually don't die often either.

Ok so for those that don't run an altenator, What do you use for belts around the crank and waterpump? Now that I have taken my Alt off, there is nothing to tension a belt. Do you all run the stretch belts from Goodyear or something else. Where can you even buy the stretch belts?

Personally I run pullies off an early 90s GMs. They used a serpentine belt for the water pump and alternator. Then I use a lawn mower belt around the water pump ond crank, then another lawnmower belt aroung the crank and power steering pump. I have never heard of stretch belts. You have to put the belt around the crank and struggle to get the water pump pully on. Patience goes a long ways.

BTW ther are many aftermarket gear reduction pully/belt solutions to your problem also.

I run them. Didn't the first year but read how to wire them up - have run them ever since. Actually had a negative battery cable come off and lay next to the battery...car never stopped running. In addition, it cuts back on the need for a 100% charged, 150# battery for the car.

I always ran a similar setup to Stromi when I had a Chevy engine. One wire alt. with serpantine pulleys. I switched to a 318 last year and haven't ran an alt. at all on it. I run two batteries and have had zero problems. It's another, whatever floats your boat subject.......
