IS IT BAD FOR A DERBY ENGINE TO RUN WITHOUT AN ALTERNATOR? SPARK VOLTAGE, POWER GENERATION, ETC, WILL IT AFFECT ELEC. PARTS AND/OR PERFORMANCE?

Been derbying for 20 yrs, never used one never had a problem. Although I do run a heavy duty semi battery, if they are fully charged they will last forever. Before that I used to run two car batteries with no problem either. To each his own but for me it just simplified everything, one less thing to go wrong or break.

I've never ran one. Run good batteries. Tune your motor correctly so you're not starting all the time.

Run double batteries! Run them parallel. Ran a stock ford 5.0 efi that way thru 3 derbies. just make sure batteries are charged before each derby.

I think it all depends on what you want the battery to do. I personally ran points distributor in Chrysler small blocks and all it ran was the ignition and to start so for me it was a no brainer. I also never ran switches as they screwed up my first show in the pits luckily. I always tried to keep it simple. Now if you run electric fans, fuel pump, etc. I would run an alternator.

i run a junk battery so i run them. usually takes a whole 3 minutes to hotwire it on my efi cars so i always do. figure its one less thing to worry about.

I run one battery, points, and an electric fan with no alternator. Do some homework and figure how many amps your accessories are drawing and what the reserve capacity of your battery/batteries is. I only run one battery because I know how much draw I am pulling through it with my setup. Again, make sure your car is tuned correctly so that you're not constantly having to re-start. Personally I only like having one acid filled bomb next to me in the drivers compartment.

What could go wrong with an alternator? I guess it could seize up, but how often does that happen? I run one because I want 14.4 volts going to my ignition not 12.5, and I run a serpentine belt so I don't worry about a v belt jumping off.I also don't want to worry about always having to charge the battery

^^^i could make the same argument for not running one. I run efi compacts with no belts at all (water pump is crank driven). Doesn't get much more simple. I run electric fuel pumps and a marine battery. Battery always has over 75% remaining when I throw it on the charger to test it. Still plenty of life left.

Battery always has over 75% remaining when I throw it on the charger to test it You are missing the point. I never charge my battery or batteries before the derby, after the derby, before the heat, after the heat, before, the consi, before the feature. Ever, period. I dont ever charge my battery. Thats what an alternator is for. In the worse case senerio, I loose a belt off my alternator during a derby. My battery is fully charged whenever it might happen. However it usually dont. JMO
