If this isn't in the correct section I apologize. Are there any fuel additives/carb cleaners that actually work? The carb on my car is acting up and I don't have the time or resources to get it rebuilt before the derby. What's everyone using?

There is no fix for a carb other than taking it apart, learning about what makes it tick and figuring out what's wrong with. Don't leave the most important part of the car till last when your out of time.

I agree. ^^^ And if you haven't, you should check the carb itself. I had a wasp build a mud nest inside mine last year. It ran, but not real good. But if you really can't take the time to do it right, I'd use a big can of Gumout spray carb cleaner. Spray it while at high RPM. Don't chock it out, but keep spraying in little shots. Spray all around inside and outside. And I guess you could put a can of liquid Gumout in the tank also.

If it is gummed up I've heard a teespoon of trans fluid does wonders but take it with a grain of salt cause I'm no carb expert. It will smoke like crazy for awhile but is suppose to clean it out real good.

Trans fluid is more of a lube, I use to mix in 6-8oz with every 5 gallon of alky.
Also helps if you have a sticky valve sometimes

It was acting fine until the middle of the week. It has the same fuel in it and the fuel is fresh. The only thing that is different is I changed the inline filter (still had the same one from last year). I'm wondering if I knocked something loose in the line when I did. The derby isn't for two weeks so I should have time to get it looked at. Thanks for the info.

Could be. But let me ask a silly question. Could you have put the filer on backwards? I've done it before.

That was the first thing I checked. I'm going to get a rebuild kit this weekend and tear into it.

I've had good luck with Amsoil carb foam. I'm no carb expert but I can take one apart and put it back together... I'd just assume not take it apart if I don't have to. Another thing you can try (learned this from a good old boy) get the car running, rev it up to about mid range and smother the carb tight as you can. It works like an extreme choke and sucks a bunch of gas cuz it cant get any air. It will usually flood the motor but if their was anything in the fuel passeges that was built up or stuck it should clear it out.

I use this chit called Neutra, it's made by Schaeffer. Not available off the shelf anywhere that I have found, but it's like SeaFoam on speed.. I started using it about 8 years ago in EVERYTHING whether it was running good before or not, and I haven't needed to clean a carb since I started using it. From chainsaw to Bobcat and everything in between- as a matter of fact I just bought a new/used lawn mower last week that had a real funky idle and was a bitch to restart after I shut it down, I dumped a capful in the tank today and within 10 minutes it was running 100%. Same story with a gummed up Holley 600 on my derby motor last season. Awesome stuff

I can't even remember to be honest, I bought a gallon back then and still have some left. I did Google it yesterday and it showed up somewhere but I didn't look into purchasing. Maybe try the Google approach if you want to try it out

Ok, thanks. On another note, I just realized I spelled additive incorrectly in the thread title! Guess that's what happens when you post in a hurry from a phone.
