I've run looped hoses on compacts with good luck. You've got to have a way to relieve pressure as heat builds up, or you will blow hoses. Dodge ran the radiator cap inline with the upper hose on Durangos and Dakotas, this is a cheap alternative to buying a setup from a speed shop.

The basic concept is that engines generate heat during the combustion process and in order to remain stable the heat has to be managed. An air cooled engine has lots of fins on it because total surface area is key for transferring heat from the metal to the air. A liquid cooled engine has smooth surfaces (no fins) because the heat transfers much easier to liquid coolant than air.... ergo, it doesn't need as much surface area to remain stable. If you really want to "dry block", figure out a way to add cooling fins to your engine or find a real air cooled engine big enough to power a derby car .... but yeah, a loop hose has two advantages over an empty block: 1) the coolant, although limited in capacity, is being circulated over the surfaces of the block by the pump 2) heat is transferred more easily to it So the point of a loop hose is not that it will keep the engine cool BUT that it will buy a little time before it overheats. It will take a while to heat up the water and that is more time than you would have had with nothing. A pressure relief is necessary as described in a few posts above. By contrast, circulating air inside the block is better than still air but it does not absorb heat as efficiently as water so there is some loss of efficiency with that. Why run without a radiator? As I told a guy last week, "if you need a radiator you're taking too long to do your business"

I'll ask this just for my own curiosity and to pick the brains of the thinkers on here. How many BTU does your standard (clean, fresh rebuilt) SBC create? I'm a big fan of oil coolers and if A guy could figure out an ice bath + a fan type cooler system you could potentially run an motor for quite a long time with no cooland and a solid block. There are just too many variables for me to figure it out on paper so I figured I'd ask.

If you were to do a big oil/ ice cooler and maybe add holes like freeze plugs and add fans wouldn't that work

I currently have my radiator hose looped with copper and no overflow. One heat maybe 15 minutes and my car is pre ran already. Any input to this? Would i just blow a hose if too much pressure builds up?

Might have lasted 5 minutes before it blew. the pressure also blew the head gasket (stock motor). Bad idea, buy a looper
