Most states require a windshield too.

Yup, safety glasses or approved sunglasses are required if there is no windshield. I have the law book and am very familiar with it. Unlike 99% of the cops in my area. I will be pulled over a lot but thats half the fun. "Do you know why I pulled you over?" No, do you? Then simply hand them their own law book and say tell me. They usually just walk away. Had my fair share of run ins with the law about legality stuff. Never got a fix it ticket or an equipment violation yet.

As long as they don't stick out the hood more than 3" there is nothing they can do about it. Same as a cowl hood except I'm running my exhaust out instead of my intake. The window bar and drivers window grate is where they're going to throw a fit.

I keep my truck quiet now but back in the day I got tickets all the time for no mufflers and a couple buddies got real nasty tickets for not having cats. They get pretty pissy about that pollution crap

Nah they don't really care about that... Hell I bet 50% of cars in central MN have the check engine light on lol. We don't get emissions tested, but everyone seems to get excited about exhaust volume so they throw noise violations out like crazy (mufflers are mandatory, and glasspacks don't count. I got 9 or 10 noise violations 4-7 years ago and all but once they crawled underneath to make sure I had cats in. Sometimes they just give a noise violation and sometimes they give you a "fix it" ticket that gives you 30 days to have mufflers installed and then back to the sheriff's dept to have inspected and cleared

I dont have cats on any of my vehicles. It will have approved collector mufflers on top but the thing is going to be licensed as a rat rod or hot rod so the emissions BS doesn't really matter. The SBC driveline came out of a 76 chevy pickup and after all the body lines are done they wont know if it was an 04 or 94. Might even put an 80's front clip on it.

Anyways guys, we can talk more about street legal derby cars later. Back to square tube drive shafts. I have seen a lot of home made sliders and I have made a few myself. We usually make them out of square pto shafts from the implement store or tri-oval. I have seen a few tube in tube but not many. The biggest thing IMO is to make sure everything is welded strait centered and square. I saw one this weekend that was not even close to balanced but it still worked. Who knows how long his pinion bearing or tail shaft will last but in a pinch you can make junk work to make junk. I machine all my flanges to fit my yokes with an interference fit so I know they are strait and true.

Ahhhh my bad, I assumed you planned to license it off the VIN and with that there would be trouble. I suppose as a rat rod you can get a homebuilt title or run it off the 76 chev VIN eh? I had a buddy last year that went around and around with the DMV trying to get a title for his '54 International pickup/ rat rod contraption and I never did find out what he ended up doing...

The splined balanced shafts are nice and all but in my opinion is the cars ain't running down the road at 70+ mph so balanced don't mean poop to me. I ran a Hanson slider and never seen or felt any vibrations.... It's all it preferences. I like hason shafts because of how much they slide plus cheaper than nerat

I stick with home made non sliders. Cars are built to hard now a days there is no need for one. And they are super cheap!
