thanks for the head's up on the Car Craft article. For years I've had intentions of booking some dyno time specifically to gather some data on different ignition setups but hadn't got around to it yet. It's great to see some documentation in a respected publishing media form that we can discuss. www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ccrp_9812_ignition_performance_test/viewall.htmlVery interesting reading and pretty much what I've been saying here and elsewhere for years. I had expected that points would give up a little at the top end due to spark scatter and that's one interpretation that can be made from the data. I know that people who are not experienced in test data interpretation will pick out a single peak number to key on but I took the whole table of data and plotted it to get a good idea of what these power curves really represent: Folks, statistically that is a dead heat between the three. You get a small bump in a small RPM window very high in the range with the performance ignition system. Big deal, that was really worth a couple of C notes in a derby car. All these guys claiming that HEI really "woke their engine up" might have to consider what I've been saying all along... measuring results by the seat of the pants leaves you vulnerable to the Placebo effect. Which means, without real measured data you might perceive the results to be whatever you expected them to be. You expected it would "wake up" your engine and your brain told you that it did, whether or not it actually did. I think we have our confirmation. The other thing I've been trying to get people to think about for years is this idea of a "hotter spark".... WTF does that mean? Yeah I know it is sexy to talk about twenty thousand extra volts of spark energy but what I've been trying to ask is, how is that a benefit to you? If you have a fuel mixture and/or cylinder conditions that are hard to light then you do get to a point where you need higher amounts of spark energy but most of us are nowhere near that territory yet guys just don't understand that the point is moot. Been saying it for years, a lot of guys are wasting their money and fooling themselves about the benefits. To which I say if you don't want to do your homework and don't attempt to understand engine tuning concepts I don't really care what gutter you throw your money down, but when other guys get on here and sincerely are looking for an education on the topics... that's when it's time to speak up.

I'm happy as hell with points dist. I even use the resistor that everybody is scared of. I just take care when mounting it plus I mount an extra right next to it just in case. Never needed it though. Never broke one or had one fail. Here is a video of mine in action. 1st heat, black and green car. 318, 727, 8 3/4 with a 5.13 gear and a heavy foot!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nNTQIc2bnA&feature=share&list=UUWxUCWjKctpyBJo2VfJzNjg

I dont have an opinion on Mopar electronic or points, however personally I love my Skip White HEI that I just ran in my 318. I will not try to tell you that it had more horsepower, but I can tell you it was only one wire and was trouble free performance. I will never experiment with other Mopar/points stuff when one wire is all that I needed. Dans post only proves my point, equal performance/easier setup. JMO

JMO "equal performance" being the key phrase in this debate. My beef has always been with the guys who claimed they were getting "better performance" from HEI. Once that is recognized we can move on to debating things like reliability etc. I have a Skip White setup too, have ran it twice now and it is working fine. I don't have enough run time on it to recommend it but so far so good and it is priced well. My only concern is where to get a replacement cap and rotor- I wrote to them and never got an answer. Have you ever looked into that and if so, what did you find?

These are valid points that are worth debating now that we don't have to guess which one performs better.
