I was curious of how yall keep your 350s cool during the derby besides coolant? If seen cars get ran and bust the radiator and they still keep kinda cool and still run well

A lot of motors today have so much $$$$ into them they could drive across county without a drop of water and not get above 200*.

I run a very loose motor. As in it burns a lot of oil. it doesn't make a ton a power but it always stays running when its very hot.

Loose tolerances, less friction, quality oil with a cooler, less heat. I'm sure theres more but without having one built, high mileage engines work well.

As in it burns a lot of oil. it doesn't make a ton a power but it always stays running when its very hot. my buddy has an old 350 out of like a 78 or 80 3/4 ton van that had 280k mi when he junked the truck we call it ole smokie.. cause it burns 2 quarts of oil in a 20 min heat!! smokes like a freight train.. but loose tolerances and it never fails to start.. |

I will never Buy a expensive "derby" Motor. I swear by the high milage oil burning motors.

I don't like the loose engines, and never run a oil burner.

I agree with rhull. Loose doesn't always mean oil burning loose. Look at the areas that produce the most friction and start there on trying to combate that. And also as said before timing is VERY VERY important, and fuel also plays a big part in timing and heat.

The reason i am asking this is cause i bout a 78 scottsdale 3/4 ton with a bad piston and im rebuilding it and i want it to run cool as possible in the derby. If you have any tips on building the it would be greatly appreciated its my first 350 rebuild. Also idk if this helps but its a 4 bolt main

Don't run a 350 if you are worried about heat Chrysler 318 is where it is at

one of the biggest things...................start with a good clean water passaged block, clean up the casting flash to help some water flow.
