My big thing here is that I did not spend much money and something is better than nothing. I never said it was the best thing out there.
Drive it like you stole it!!

It's just constructive criticism. Take it or leave it but don't take it personal. If it works for you then go for it. There are many opinions on the subject. I prefer air cooled personally but that doesn't mean that ice doesn't work. At the end of the day its all personal preference.

This what I usually run, I even put my fuel line through it. Drive it like you stole it!! The biggest concern I have with that setup is if the trans lines do get very hot, you may be actually heating your fuel rather then cooling it with your fuel line resting right on the trans line. Thank you for your concern, I will probably do something different there. Drive it like you stole it!!

I was thinking something like that but didn't know how it would fare if the fender crushed in.

As you can see in the picture. The cage did a pretty good job protecting it.

Not sure what kind of car your running but my buddy put his in the cowl of a 60's mopar and packed it with ice once. Rules stated the same as yours. Seemed to work alright.

Just throwing this out there and the guy that built some of my transmissions years ago told me from his side of the deal if I ran short heats 20-30 minutes to go with the ice chest style cooler the trans fluid stayed cooler with that style for the shorter heats. He then said if I was planning on being in a longer heat that he'd recommend I use the fan style and that my average trans Temps would be higher but stay consistent throughout the night preventing anything from getting cooked. Take it or leave it I'm not a transmission specialist I'm just passing on what he said good luck everyone.

Is it OK to put a stock trans cooler (79 LTD in my case) in some kind of steel case filled with ice? Or I should use a coil of copper tube instead? What would be better to transfer the heat?
Thanks!

That's exactly what was running through my mind lol. I'm thinking, build a 12x12x12 steel box, insulate it, run fittings through the side so there'd be no hoses running through the steel, nice sealed top, and I'd just use one of my aftermarket coolers which is 10x12x1.5. Filled it with ice and worked like a champ. Did u just use rubber line and hose clamp it with those barbed fittings? Use those ends on the trans to? Gonna make one kinda like this but I figured using steel like from trans and just using a fitting to hook them up instead of rubber.

Another thing to remember when using rubber or steel lines is that rubber will bend and form around an object to some extent, where steel will kink.
