had lots questions about 351m and 400 ford to make them better derby motors.
1. Get rid of stock timing chain. there made from plastic and first time u get it hot the plastic timing gear will start poping teeth off and it will quit running on you. Plus the stock timing chains were retarded stock to help with smog stuff.
ebay has good 351c double rollers for like $35 cams are fairly cheap to get a good rv tow cam wakes 351m/400s up
2. 351m/400s are not high rpm motors. if you spin them over 4500-5000rpm for very long you will start droping valves. A cheap way to prevent this is while on ebay/summit/jegs ordering your timing chain buy a set of 10" locks and replace your stock 7" locks this will help with poping heads off valves.
3. Strip them down and eliminate all egr and other un needed vacuum lines.
4. Hei distributor and lock out the advance.
5. This goes for all motors ford chevy and dodge. buy a good set of valve cover gaskets. if you run zoomies or even fliped stock manifolds. cheap cork gaskets get hot and will pop or burn out and then you got oil running down on hot exhaust and woof fire.
with these few mods you will have a great pusher torque motor.

Well, I got to chim in here, 351-M & 400 are considerd small blocks it's the length of the block ( bore spacing) all 221,260,289,302,351-w,351-m & 400 all have the same bore spacing, And yes they've got several other difference's ( main bore, deck height, etc) and the 351-m and 400 blocks take the tall 429 460 bell housing. All 221,260 and early 289 (to the middle of 1965) are five bolt bellhousing blocks and the rest are six bolt. All stock valves have 7 degree locks and these fit 7 degree retainers if you go to 10 degree locks you'll also need the 10 degree retainers (10 degree stuff is aftermarket). And don't put 1.73 rocker arms off of 351-m , 400 ,429 or 460 (these are canted valve heads)on to inline valved heads that have 1.6 ratio rocker arms. The lenth is too long over the valve tip, 1.575 " on the 1.6 virs 1.675" on the 1.73. center line of rocker stud to center line of valve roller tip, that's a .100" difference . (I'm measuring these from Comp Cams brand roller rockers) yeah they will bolt on but with the roller (or falkrum of a stamped steel rocker) riding on the outer edge of the valve it will pull the valve back toward the guide and beat the guide , valve tip & rocker to hell. Check EVERYTHING when you assemble !

They use the big block transmission bolt pattern though, right?

there kind of a retard baby. there based on the 351c small block but with a taller deck. they use big block motor mounts and the later ones have big block bell housing pattern. i personally have only seen one with the small block trans pattern and it was in a 1974 torino. they interchange lots of parts with the 351c like heads and gaskets, timing stuff, cams ext ext ext but not intakes "but can use a 351c intake with intake spacers"
as for the not using 1.73s on small block inline valve heads. Ford did this stock on the cobra 302s. also been a IMCA ford trick for years. track tested and ford approved.

Yes the 1.7 Comp Roller Rockers (#1054 ) are made for the inline valve head, they didn't put 1.7 BBC or 1.73 BBF /Cleavland rockers on that CarCraft built engine. And the Ford Boss 302 had Cleavland canted valve heads (thats how they could get the R's up & make them breathe). Take a stock 1.6 & a stock 1.73 Ford rockers side buy side & you'll see the difference, with the BB being too long it goes over the edge of the valve. What makes the different ratio's is how close the push rod is to the falkrum centerline. And yes 351/400 are small blocks that take BB tranny bolt pattern. I'm not trying to step on anyones toe's here, just trying to help out Ford guys with what their working on. I'll be 55 this year and I've been building hot Fords for a VERY LONG TIME. I've had TONS of HiPo Ford & Merc goodies over the years, yeah I know this dosent mean that I know everything but I've had my hands on alot of engines & trannies and I've made alot of mistakes too ...thats how a person learns it.

Ive had tha same problem in tha past kolormecustom.. Using a pushrod length checker and ordering the correct shorter length pushrod will correct for the misalignment of the 1.73 rocker arm on an inlne SBF head.. As for the small block/big block argument of the 351m/400 , Ford guru's have been arguing this since their existence .. But I'll side with kolormecustom on this.. Since they share more similarities and bore spacing with a small block , I call them a small block.
