Instead if practicing on your bumper, weld everything else on the car. Go ahead and get your practice on stuff like the cag, suspension, door straps, etc. That way, when you get to the bumper, you don't have to worry. I will do that, also, the rules around where i derby changed last month since all the old bumpers are getting scarce were allowed to use either a 4x4 1/4" thick square tubing or a 2x6 1/4" thick rectangular, which one would be better, and the best way to mount? not allowed to add any metal only for welding up the bumper to the shock up to the rad cradle Are you saying that you aren't allowed to add metal to mount a bumper for thrillshow? For compacts you definitely are allowed to add metal.

your allowed to add plates for the bumper shocks but you cant be adding extra plates to cover up holes in the bumper or add metal in the center of the bumper where the bend spots are.

Meh, Thrillshow rules are more like guidelines ahaha. I saw lots of cars this year at Thrillshow shows running bumpers built to Impact Motorsports rules (seam welded fullsize bumpers or loaded rebar bumpers) They might not put it in the rules but if they're allowing steel tubing bumpers they'll have a hard time telling someone they can't load a 98-02 vic rebar bumper. I know I'm going to run loaded rebar bumpers next year.

Anyone ever try a 74 el camino front bumper? They look pretty solid... Same as a Malibu. Some say the 74-77 El Camino bumpers are just a skin, as they can be classified as a truck, I myself have never seen this. We have pulled a few from El Caminos that were identical to a Malibu with a full backing. malibu bumpers are no where close to camino bumpers. put two next to each other and compare/ weigh them. theres pictures of the one i had on a 78 caddy in the 77 + pictures thread after 6 runs and it went a seventh and was still straight when the guys i loaned it to scrapped it with the car it was on along with my 425 and 6 inch chrome stacks and a battery box. i was pissed

I may go bumper searching tomorrow I know the yard has a 77 and 88 Caprice as well as two 87 Fifth Aves. Would they be steel backed? and any good for at least lighter builds without stuffing the crap out of them?

there may be a chance the chevys will but it will be a soft bumper and the steel backed 80's chevy bumpers are super rare. the 5th avenues will not have good derby bumpers.

If the bumperette/guard is flush I leave them if they extend up or down they get cut off. Its just something to get caught and hang you up.

I beat the top and bottom smooth so they don't get hung on anything and weld them on. Many people take them off. Its all personal preference.
