What are you running it in and if it a pre 96 motor you should all ways run a zinc additive it helps to not ware out the cam the new oils don't have the right amout for older motor

Brad Penn and it all depends on the clearances the engine is set up with, just because it's thick doesn't mean it's going to work for your app.
Rod Bearing Clearance Suggested viscosity <-.0021 multi-vis 5w20 .0021-.0026 multi-vis 5w30 .0026-.0031 multi-vis 10w40 .0031-> muilti-vis 20w50
Main Bearing Clearance suggested viscosity <-.002 multi-vis 5w20 .002-.0025 multi-vis 5w30 .0025-.003 multi-vis 10w40 .003-> multi-vis 20w50
They other thing to remember about bearing clearance's is more is not always better, the more bearing clearance you give it the more your raising oil temps because you are not spreading the load out on the bearing there fore putting more pressure one location and raising oil temps.

I dont know whats been done when I got the motor it was just the lower end pistons, crank, bearings I took the pistons out replaced the bearings and rings. It is bored 30 over it is a loose motor. I put a rv cam new lifters pushrods 993 heads with 194 valves edelbrock performer intake gear driven timing gear msd distributor high volume oil pump and a 500 cfm 2g Rochester carb so I have no clue what to run I was going to run royal purple in it but also thought about quaker state 0w20 I have ran rotella 15w40 so I dont know what to use its a 70s model 4 bolt main

Oil types for bearing clearances are important, but no one mentioned that a lighter oil is needed to properly lube the rings and prevent sidewall wear.
I would run a 5W30 synthetic blend in gasoline motors. Diesels...use something like 15w40 Rotella, or use a full synthetic 5w30 oil if you have a tight motor that won't leak. There are manufacturers that state a certain weight of oil to use with their engines.
If you ever get a chance to watch someone use a bearing load tester, please do. You will be amazed at what a synthetic oil does versus the older oils with regards to rod/crank friction.

Just started using the recycled oil from Valvoline, 10w-40 in my 250k 'Benz, seems to work well compared to the previous brand i've used (Pennzoil) and doesn't make my engine lose a lot of oil between changes. I just add a quart every 2k miles/2 months instead of adding a quart every 1k miles/per month. engine doesn't burn oil or have any cracks (knocks wood) aside from lightly seeping thru 25 year old gaskets.

I run Mobil1 20-50 synthetic. It's not overly priced and easy to get.
