STAY WITH THE 360 INTAKE.

Whats the point of lowering your compression so far? I don't like this idea the chamber size on the 360 is bigger which will lower compression down to a 10.5-1 if not lower on old worn out rings (it also depends on the year of the block your using). If you doing to just get the bigger valves in your 318 well take the 360 valves and put them in the 318 heads! Go the extra mile and stick 2.02's in that 318 head (yes they will fit and clear)! So I guess the question is is why do you wanna do this anyway?

Seems to be a great debate on this and if it has any advantage. I have a rebuilt 318 with heads that came off a cop engine and a 360 intake. Guess I will find out how that works out.

the reason that i am considering this option is that i was running a 360, and unfortunatly it bit the dust. So i have a 318 hanging around and i wanted to swap what parts that i bought for the 360 over to the 318. Plus i hear that they r good conversions, and makes them run pretty good. Or is this a lie??

In my eyes that 318 is better with out them 360 heads. The big reason a lot of guys put the 360 heads on are for the bigger valves not taking into consideration that there taking compression away from the motor ya ya low compression isn't a bad thing in motors for us but I have actually seen the combination in a car before and thing spun and spun for ever like there was no compression there it would finally start once it built enough compression to fire the gas by then it was flooded pretty bad.
Matt you used heads off of a 318 cop car engine? and a 360 intake? them cop car heads have a bigger valves in them already matter fact I have a set sitting in the garage. Using the 360 intake will just help the fact that you can bolt a 2g carb on top and like every mopar in order to make it run right you have to add chevy stuff!

Yes I have heads that came off a 318 cop car engine. with a 2 barrel 360 intake. Do you for see any problems with that set up? I have a Rochester 2 barrel going on it!

Can a guy just take the valves off of the 360 heads and put them on the 318 heads or will this not do a thing??

I know the logic of 360 heads on a 318 doesn't work out on paper, but in real life it seams to work. I had a set of rebuilt 302 heads on a 318 and it seemed to run fine. Eventually I burnt out the head gaskets like I usually do on my 318's and just for the heck of it I threw a set of 360 heads on the same motor and it was night and day difference. It screamed like a raped ape. All my 318's have 360 heads on them now......

we did this and my engine builder told me to shave the heads to keep the compression up i used a set of j heads off a 360 i dont remember how much we took off them we also matched the intake to the heads

Shave em for the street, but not for a derby... Andy said it best...runs like a raped ape! I get frustrated with all the experts on here that never built one. We all know that compression makes power, but in the derby world low compression is an advantage too, u really on the more air for making power with this combo, u need the cam and intake too, you'll be impressed.

Trust me I'm not exspert but have built a few engines in my day. That's why I say to keep the stock compression of the motor with the 318 heads, but you wanna get it to breath, increase the valve size! Cause in my eyes your getting more bang for your buck when you keep the stock heads but put the 360 valves in it!

Not trying to offend u at all rayray, this has been debated by many. But i will say it is a bad combination running a 360 intake on 318 heads, u have a large port on your intake, then the the air and fuel hits the small port on the head, not good, lose alot of flow, resulting in loss of power and torque.
