They are stronger than the D60 which has a 9.75 ring gear to the D70s 10.5. Also most D70s have a 35 spline 1.5" shafts, some had a 32 spline shaft.
My biggest complaint with a Dana 60-80 series is having to own a case spreader to get the carrier out.

I think this axle has 4.56 gears already so all I plan on doing is welding the spiders and running it.

Google Dana Case spreader and you'll see what I'm talking about. For $150 if it had a good ratio (like 4.56 you say it has), I'd jump on it all day long. I'd take any stock full floater over basically any built 5 lug axle.
The Dana 70 is not my favorite of the full floaters, but by no means is it a bad unit.

My biggest con is there is like 3 different versions of the D70 so ordering parts including gears can be a pain. Pro is they are a very stout unit.
If I had a Sterling 10.25, a 14 bolt, and a D70 all laying in front of me for the same price, I wouldn't pick the D70. But if there was a 4.56 Dana 70 and the sterling and 14 bolt had 3.55s and I was on a budget, I would grab the D70 everytime.

Our camp has ran them with zero issues. Imo if you can find a 14 bolt you should be able to find one in same price range. I prefer those for amount that were made, bearings and rebuild stuff is relatively cheap, axles are everywhere. And internally the way the carrier is held in and adjusted doesnt get any better.
Dana 70 should give you no problems though.

I have no experience with a dana 70. But my buddy junked a dana 60 in one run. Personally, you couldn't give me one.

70 is a much better unit than 60 everything is bigger. I'd run one for sure, unless it's a old coarse spline axle. Even then I'd run it but shafts will be its demise
Better clearance than a 14 bolt in factory form too. Relatively same strength wise (chevy in 70s/80s ran 70 in dually trucks vs 14 bolt unknown reason to me) but as for derby parts 14 bolt has more available, axle savers

I have no experience with a dana 70. But my buddy junked a dana 60 in one run. Personally, you couldn't give me one. The D60 uses considerably smaller axle shafts than the D70s. The full float D60 uses a 30 spline 1.30" shaft compared to the D70, 14 bolt, and Sterling's 1.5" shaft. Now if you want to be a cool guy and want to be budget friendly. You get the carrier from a Semi-float D60 which uses 35 spline 1.5" shafts and put that in a D60 full float housing and then ream the spindles out to 1.5" ID and put in the shafts from a 35 spline D70. That's the poor boy way of getting a stout full floater with the smallest (unshaved) pumpkin to get the most ground clearance.

I have heard about doing that in wheeling rigs, my only concern would be spindle strength for this application then
A 70u has a smooth bottom and more clearance too.than the others
