i have looked all over on this site and cant find a pics of one. i want to build a unit my self. pics would be great. i know im asking a lot but would be a big help. i want to do away with a straight shaft. i had one push back and pinned me between the steering wheel and the seat . how much slide are you guys putting in them? i was looking to get a foot but some tell me i wont need that much. i am building one for a 80s ford. thanks for your help.

I believe mine has about 6-8 inches of slide

I didn't build mine, but was told it was made from a 90s Chevy column. It has a slider in it, looks to move around 4 to 6 inches. I will try and get a pic when I can.

I usually use a stock collapsible section with the plastic removed, 3/4 heim joints, 3/4 u joints, and a quick disconnect on all my columns. I have used many different types of stock collapsible sections, the important thing if you use one and make sure it moves freely before installation and has plenty of travel. Some people make their columns where the shaft slides freely inside the heim joints. Its all personal preference. I have also heard of people making homemade slider sections with square pipe. You could likely use some type of trioval or splined sliding section if you found something in 3/4.

you could still run a solid one and just dont have it anywhere close to you. I have my arms as streched out as far as I can when I start with my solid columns. If you are going to have a slide I would try to get as much as possible.

I quit running slip columns and went with solid columns again because no matter how much slide I had they always bottomed out. Then again I may have messed up my cars too much. The last slide column I ran costed me possibly a win. Getting to second and not being able to steer sucks, never again. JMO

Ran out of slide. 6" wasn't enough, 7 inches wouldn't have been enough. Once it runs out of slide it starts bending and binding. In the end, end up going back and forth and can't turn.

Stock BOP is what I always use, just clean it up real good and make sure it slides freely.. Had one bottom out and bust the u-joint at the steering box but only had about 4-5 inches of play. I run atleast 8 inches now and havn't had any problems, but I'd rather have no steering than get hurt from a solid shaft.

No the slide did not bend and it was out of a 74 olds 98. But they do not have enough slide if you belly a car too far. The 98s and 225s I do believe have more slide than other cars but still not enough when a car gets too messed up (pushed back and bellied). All this is my opinion and experience. As said if you start with the steering wheel as far away from you as you can reach it will not get back to you. This car had a solid column and you can see how far away it is from the seat still.

I just bought a collapsing one but im still gonna make it where it'll slide in the Heim joints incase it runs out of slide. The steering box will be hitting the master cylinder before the wheel will be crowding me. I think by that point im not gonna be able to see so steering will be pointless. But I should put on a good show getting it there.
