I just got done building a 2.0 and I dont think the dis will work out of a 2.3. I had to go to a pertronix's igntion to do away with the points system. I have only ran it one time so far but the 2.0 will get up stairs.

So how many people are finding that most 2.3 heads are cracked I've had our local machine shop check 6 this winter... only one good one and it was a buddy's. You can't see the cracks while the heads are assembled so I wonder how many guys aren't finding the cracks. I'm lucky enough to have one of the best machine shops in the state 5 minutes from work but it's got me half depressed. I took the head off of the engine that I ran all last year because it was running good still when I parked the car I assumed it was still good... nope 4 small cracks. It may f*ck me in the end but I'm putting a head with a small crack back on as of now

needing some input on a 2.3, Im going from big cars to mini, wanna try something new. Ive got an 89 mustang with the 2.3 manual tranny in it, well picking it up tomorrow anyway.
How well do these motors hold up stock? Do the 89's have EFI or Carb, been reading and thinking maybe going with the 4412 carb i guess it is? Should a person go with the duraspark setup or with a point or hei if they make it. (remember im going from using a 350 SBC, know nothing about 2.3) Starter? stock or should i go with a power master 2.3 starter. Anyother inputs on the motor, suggestions or whatever? Whats the trouble with converting them from EFI to carb?
Thanks fellas

I bought a 76 Pinto and a 77 Mustang 2 for the motors but both came with 4 speed standards. I am having trouble finding auto transmissions. Does any one have a link or a list of what will fit the 2.3 engines. The motors are away getting built and I will not have time to find a replacement if they don't fit.

Fired up my very first 2.3 today and I have a problem that hopefully someone can help me on. The motor quit starting period after I fired it up a few times. Played with many things before I decided to pull the valve cover. Come to find out the half my followers came off and are laying on the bottom of the head. After doing a bunch of research for the last couple of hours, both on here and all over the web, I think I have some answers and more questions. Now remember this is my very first 2.3 and my very first overhead cam that I have worked on so some of these questions may seem stupid to some, don't make fun of me too much lol. First off, it is a flat tappet cam and I believe solid lifters. Now are the lifters on this type of engine the pivot point on the opposite side of the valve??? From what I've read, thats the conclusion i've come up with. Also from what I've read in this thread, it would be wise of me to use mousetraps to hold my followers in place. If I use those, should that prevent the problem I'm having with the followers coming completely off??? And one more question I can think of..... What should the lash be set at and how do I go about doing that??? Thank you for any help in advance. If anybody needs me to clarify any of what I just typed, please say so. I have under 2 weeks to get this motor running and finish the vehicle. My head hurts, lol.

OK guys my motor has been running great since I changed the carb. I filled the fuel tank with Turbo blue and I have run it around the yard a lil bit. I went out today after it has sit for a week but anyways I went start it and itwas a lil rough to state like it was cold natured and then it was hard for it to take fuel. It would kinda fall on its face unless I eased into it. And now when its running it has blow by coning out of the cap. Its never had the blow by. Can someone give a little advice here. Is it possible I spun a main bearing? Thanks guys

Doubtful on the bearing. A spun bearing will stop oil flow, causing a hell of a screech, along with rattles from lack of oil pressure.

Hellbent, when that happened to me it was a burned piston. I hope that's not the case with you but something to look into. At the very least, having the head off will give you the chance to inspect the condition cylinder walls.
