is a sure grip unit more likely to be found in either a 741, 742, or 489 case? Found one in a 741 and thought that seemed less likely.

Id say that one carrier is just as likely as the next to have one.. Only difference is a cone type suregrip vs a clutch pack style

I've probably seen fewer overall in a 741.... but I have seen them. In particular I recall one that came from a 4 speed Dart and two that were in 6 cyl trucks

So 8 3/4 rears are the only ones with bolt in axles or can they be found on 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 since they came on pickups and vans??

I have a 57 open differential with 4.11 gears I want to put in a 67 housing and axle setup. If I understand correctly it should work but it wouldnt work to put the 67 center in the 57 housing as the axles wouldnt seat. To further confuse me I want to put a suregrip in the 57 center/gears and put it in the 67 housing and use the 67 axles? I havent figured out what a thrust block is so not sure if this'l work or not? This is a hot rod project.

now I have almost no experience messing with the 50's axles, so take this for what it is worth but by my understanding the center section is interchangeable. The axle shaft design changed in 1965 but I have been able to use the older centers in the newer housings. What I am not sure of is how the axle runout is adjusted on the older axles and this may be the part where you heard you would have an issue with getting them to "seat". On the newer ones the taper bearing is adjustable for runout and so you can set the end play for how they engage the thrust block in the diff.

from memory, the older splined axles still have the same adjustable taper bearing to set the runout, I'm just not real confident in my memory on that one

Hey guys I'm making my first hybrid rearend and at the bracing stage. So far I have the back and top braces tacked on and started the bottom knowing I need to add the lower control brackets so I will cut them accordingly but my rearend is 28 inches to each of the rearend, not to the flanges but to the axles tube ends. So I'm wondering if there is any one out there thay knows of hand where abouts the lower brackets will sit from that point on the tube. Two inches seams pretty far out based off a ten bolt. Thanks in advance!

the only way I have done it is to mock it up on the car, that way I know it is right.

Anyone know where to find some good aftermarket 8 3/4 axles for a c body? 30-ish inch. seems easy enough to find A/B/E body axles just no c-body stuff outhere. Yukon gear makes 30" axles, but i was hoping to find something a little stronger. I broke 2 axles and twisted 2 more in just 3 heats in my last show. im sure its because i run 456 gears, but i'd rather spend money on better axles than gear up....

For the money I'd go with Moser....when you really figure it up for the cost of a new spool 35 spline is a fairly cost effective route too.
