I've got a 72 727 behind a bb 400. Guy claimed tranny was rebuilt recently, but some how only has reverse. He was right. Reverse only. Fluid looks clean but..... Is halfway up dipstick. Obviously there is way too much fluid. What are chances changing fluid and filter would give me forward gears? Worth a shot?

I doubt it will start working by draining fluid and changing filter. But guess ya could try.

I tried all gears. Reverse was the only one with any life, and worked perfect. I left it Idleing in neutral for about 10 mins and tried them again. Still just reverse, which confuses me.

I think reverse uses both clutchpacks but 1st only uses the back so I'm guessing the back clutchpack may be bad idk for sure. I've actually had the opposite happen a few times-good forward, no reverse and the back frictions were toast which doesnt make sense why I had forward. Unless when the band engaged it kept slipping and the other clutch pack acted like it was in drive or something? You'll just have to take it apart and see, could be broken seals etc. too. I dont have the link but on utube there is a video series on how to build a 727 capable of standing up to 600hp-very good, makes rebuilding one less intimidating.

I rebuilt my first 2 727's using this exact video series. press play. press pause, remove 2 bolts, press play, press pause, remove 2 more bolts, press play, press pause..... takes a while but it's a great learning tool. to use as step by step or just something to watch, kind of like a documentary (Moporn)

I've tried before with books but just wasnt confident but that series takes the mystery out of it, real easy.

rear clutch is used in all forward gears, front clutch is used for reverse and 3rd. If the rear clutch was ok but the sprag clutch was bad you would have 1st in the low 1 position but not the D position. Based on the symptoms, I would guess the rear clutch is smoked.

Anyone have any pictures of home made shifters? Got a 318 with a 727 behind it, looking for some ideas. Don't have the money right now to go out and buy a nice one, so any help would be awesome.

Good ol cane shifter works great. Not as easy to find gears, but is dirt cheap to make and works. Along with that you could look through the DIY thread in the general tips and tricks section

When you guys drill and tap a trans to mount a nerat yoke on the trans what method has worked for you to keep the yoke on and fluid in? Do you use thread locker or a gasket sealer on the bolt, or both (gasket sealer at the top, locker on the bottom)? Or sealer and a lock washer?

I use red loctight on the bolt, need to heat it before you can remove it but... at least you know its gonna stay.... Blue loctight may be enough but ive never used it, don't know for sure. ive never used any sealer or gasket stuff. as long as the rear seal is good. you are in business.
