I have had trouble with the steering boxes on the wagons that I have ran...The frame seems to want to bend right there, and also the motor mount crossmember for some reason...Maybe its just my luck...maybe its a weak spot..Solution: Take the motor out and weld a thick piece of plate ontop of the motor crossmember..Cut a template out of cardbord and measure clearance inbetween oil pan and crossmember first. I have done this to several cars after including sedans and it seems to work awesome...really beefs the front part of the frame...no broken steering boxes either... better for keeping motor mounts in place also Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

i like to add some angle iron to the rear wheel wells and rear floor. this prevents them from tearing and adds some strength. MOPAR OR NO CAR!!! Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

How do you guys get buy with this stuff?? We can't touch a welder to our frames anywhere except bumper to bracket. No all thread can go through the frame to the body. This is all our local state rules that we run. Guess we have to count on our driving skills. (LOL) Pink Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

I have a 74 sport burb, that is pretty clean. The quarters are bottomless, other than that it is super clean. still udercoated and everything. The sub even still has the black paint on it. Do you think the quaters being rusted out will ruin the car? should I patch them or forget it?

the 1/4's won't make much difference.Sure it would help a little, but as long as the floorpans are rustfree they will hold up good.since mopar wagons are uni-bodys they reley on the floorpans and roof for support. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

never built a round back, what do you mean?? Are they not on the frame already?? Pics would be good if you have any or just a better explanation would work also.... Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by King360 on Oct 11th, 2004, 3:12pm
no the springs on a mopar wagon are beside the frame which is weaker then when u put them to the frame the asses are much meaner when puttin them straight to the frame like a roundback is Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

CHAIN THE HUMPS! i used #9 on the humps on mine tripple wrapped and it broke it. wire and bolt the body to the frame in as many places as possible. theres a pic of mine somewhere i think around page 15 in the imp/mopar pics thread.
P.S. the yards here couldnt care less if the cars have a VIN or not. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PUTTING ALL THREAD FROM THE FLOOR OF THE WAGON UP TO THE TOP AND THROUGH? NOT GOING THROUGH THE FRAME JUST THE FLOOR ALONG THE GATE IN THE BACK?? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by bstormer on Dec 2nd, 2004, 10:46am
if u ask me i'd say your better off to go through the frame as well since they have trouble with the body staying on the frame.
Anybody ever sedagon one of these? how did it work did you connect the subframes? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

I always wanted to weld allthread to frame and run it up thru the roof and plate it,then weld tailgate solid, chain humps.,use a imp. sub up front with a pointy bumper on a wagon, but my rules won't allow anything like this. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

run chain or something over the top of the humps then down around the axle to keep the humps from puckering up. put it on there while there is weight on the susupension. i used double wrapped #9 on my T&C but it broke on one side and kinked. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Whats the best way to make these stout in the back and not bend down? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by Rusty Shackelford on Jan 13th, 2005, 12:21pm
I think that chaining the humps would be the best way to prevent blowing the humps out and bending the rear down. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by Imperialkid on Jan 13th, 2005, 12:51pm
I had a 65 Dodge Polara wagon that I fliped the rear axle and bolted it to the bottoms of the leaf springs like a truck. Ran it that way for one derby, then flipped it back on top of the springs and ran 16" tires on the back for the second derby. Ran it the same way in the third derby. These were full weld derbies and the rear end came straight in and I never chained the humps. The roof stayed straight as an arrow. I think it might depend heavily on the rear post by the tailgate. If you get the those posts and the upper part of the tailgate bending inward, they don't kink at the humps as bad. What do ya think? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by hemi1 on Jan 13th, 2005, 12:54pm
bend middle of tailgate in.so tailgate looks like a V from the back if ya look at it. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

i ran a 1970 town and country wagon this year we welded every seam on the inside, welded the tailgate shut from the inside and out , welded every door shut inside and out . put a pipe across the dash and behind the seat, tucked the hood and all threaded the nose in 4 corners, and i also put a 73 imperial sub frame under it with a 360 engine and a 727 trans and a 8-3/4 rear with 3:91 under it and a new yorker bumper on it . it was one evil machine need less to say i won the feature. it came down to a similar welded lincoln i think it was a 77 mark 8 or something with mopar under the hood and a similar welded ford LTD. i hit the LTD so hard i bent his roll cage , i swear on my life !!! if i had a pic of the cage in the LTD i would post it . the wagon was trashed after this one show but the sub frame still lives on .

Anyone ever run an older b-body wagon? I ran a 68 once, but I didn't know anything about them then, and now I have a lead on a 65 Coronet wagon. Any specific tips for them? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by bkscrapper54 on Feb 14th, 2005, 6:05pm
i ran a 73 fury and put a 76 newyorker sub and clip on it, rear end was rustier than hell, I chained my shackels together inside car to make sure the rear end didnt fall out and i folded in quarters and sucked them in with all thread. Rear end held up real well in heat til i took a hard corner shot in the feature and broke leaf springs. to make a long story short wasn't worth the time and effort TEXT Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Man, I have found a ton of mopars lately. I've scouted a 78 Newport, 7? Fury Salon, 7? Fury wagon, 68 Coronet 4-door, 66 or so Polara, 7? Polara, and a couple of dippies. Anyway, there is a 0% chance that my other half will allow that much iron in the yard so I'll have to be choosy. I'm thinking the Newport and the Fury wagon... how much is a good price for one of these wagons? It has a m/t, it looks rusty but alright, and a huge dent in the rear right door where the owner hit a moose. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by hitmhard12 on Mar 5th, 2005, 6:50pm
Depends on year of wagon and if it's the B-body or shocker. Pinch frame (B-body) running maybe $100-200, if it's a shocker (Gran Fury), maybe up to double I'd pay, but if the floors are no good pass, that's where the strength is back there. 1/4 don't seem to matter too bad.
Personally I'd add the Newport and both Polaras. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Got a clean 73 dodge polara wagon. Can not chain the humps or use alltread. Can weld body inside and out 6 and 6 with 2 straps going from the wagon gate to the bumper. Also must be stock suspension in stock location. Any tips on the rear for this car? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dm440c on Mar 17th, 2005, 3:46pm
well, those rules take away the only things I know of for making the rear better than it already is. It should do well for you with the gate welded and the straps to the bumper. Just try to get some height with your spring pack and reinforce anything else that the rules allow. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

i picked up a 100% rust free 73 fury wagon...what im wondering is how the y style frame will hold up...ive ran a lot of 74 an ups but never one of these...i welded the frame seems put bolts an washers through the holes behind the a-arms..an put 74 shock mounts compressed an welded..an a chevy impala back bumper with the skins welded...you guys think it will hold strong....or go up fast Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

how do you set up the tailgates on mopar wagons ? do you leave them on or take them off? I can't weld it and this wagon's spare tire well is GONE, but the rest is good. I was thinking about blowing a hole thru the body just in front of the gate and wrapping chain around the rear pillars and thru the gate to hold it in place. what do ya think? also , those tires are wicked !! what the hell are they ? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

No frame welding allowed.............It's a limited weld derby with only outside seams being allowed and you can weld the bumper on. The humps are chained and after the first run I tried to notch it because as you can see it's starting to drop the roof down just after the luggage rack. As for the tires they are implement tires. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Post by moparkid17 on Aug 11th, 2005, 10:43pm
I don't have any pics of the notch......As you can see in the pics the only reason I notched it was the fact that it's breaking in half. The roof is buckling right in front of the luggage rack. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

a uni relies on the roof and floorboards for strength, so as others said, it would belly hard unless major work was done, even then I am skeptical Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Post by redneckracin on Nov 6th, 2005, 5:34pm
Do not sedagon these cars, the can be a great car if built right. Ran 2 times with a 73 wagon with a 77 NY rear bumper on the front, plated the Y, and body welded 6 and 6. She finally started splitting the seams in front of the humps. Front end and behind the humps never moved. Will have the center fixed and run it again next year. I could not chain the humps but found other ways to fix that problem. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

building a 71 Satellite wagon for XDDL and I'm not sure how to best apply the threaded rod to the rear. We can use four pieces of 3/4" threaded rod, but they CAN'T go through the frame. This is a super solid NC car, no rust at all. We plan to run chain over the humps and under the axle, from what I can read in the rules there are no restrictions on how the threaded rod can be oriented in back, only that it can't go through the frame. Any suggestions? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by hemi1 on Dec 6th, 2005, 12:20am
Yep make a big X in the back.when ya look thru rear quarter windows itd look like a X.run threaded rod thru floor pan up thru roof with plate on bottom of floor pan and a big plate on the roof.I've always wanted to do this to a wagon, but we can not run allthread in the rear of a wagon anymore... Post by hemi1 on Dec 6th, 2005, 12:32am
no itd be 4 peices...2 next to one frame rail and 2 more next to the outher frame rail.I'd use the biggest plates they would allow.then where the 2 threaded rods crossed at the X weld them together. With the humps chained, leaf springs clamped, and tail gate welded I'd think it would be a tank in the rear... I WONDER WHY THEY WON'T LET YA GO THROUGH THE FRAME IT WOULD MAKE THINGS ALOT EASIER ALSO WITH THE AVAILABLITY AND PRICE OF CARS THESE DAYS THE PROMOTERS NEED TO START MAKING THEIR RULES SO THE CARS LAST LONGER BUT KEEP IT FAIRLY STOCK SO THEY DO BEND. P&P HAS A GREAT SET OF RULES Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

i ran a 77 plymouth gran fury wagon i did not sedagon itbut what i did on the front frame behind the a arms was plated the frame with half inch think angle in fromt of the arms cut frame open and layed a piece of 2x2 1/4 inch thick box tubbing inside and welded it all over also cut out the tubbing fo the holes in the frame so they could not se it in there on the back i also cut it open and layed some c channel 1/4 inch thick from front to rear welded the floor back in ground it down and also bondoed the floor to where no body could ever tell plus also on the rear wheel wells on the inside of the car where the floor meets the wheel well clean it and weld some electric fence post in that seem its still week enough for it to bend some but also keeps that from splitting apart and also weld your cage to where it connects the front and rear frame together i won 2 derbies in one week with this car beleave me it works just take your time and dont get in a hurry thicar also made a pointy newyorker bumper roll up in the center like a imperial frame would Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

hey jimbercanpass
read the rules of the forum first, you asked what a good mopar is in some random section, and now you ask for tips on a 68 imp in the wagon thread
read the posting rules, post in the right sections and the correct threads
if you look in the mopar section, there is a whole thread dedicated to noser imps Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Yes, we have done that before. Had to chain the car down and use a car lift to stretch it back out. Now we just run all thread through the frame and roof and chain the humps down and we don't have that problem. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Mine dont allow frame connectors, or chaining the humps. It will have a flat stack of 9 leafs and gears. The shocks are short and thick and the tail gate wouldnt come open with the jaws of life. It is welded up good in the rear. I even welded the fuel door. Little rust but not as bad as I thought. It should be a good one Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

I think i have a 69-71 plymouth Custom surburban wagon, not sure tail lights say 69 but every one says it is a 70 or 71. Well my question is That the wagon is from new york and boy do we have rust. This wagon the back 1/4s are gone, and the very middle back , where it is round and goes down. the drivers side floor board is gone also. The rest of the car is in great shape, frame on back looks like showroom and front also. If i take sheet metal and place it over the holes on the inside. Would this car hold up ok? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by PlumCrazy44 on Apr 30th, 2006, 11:51am
I'd lay some thick metal "thick" over the driversside floor and mount the frame with a new body bolt and some big washers, make sure you weld it to the door frame so it has some strength. Thick enough that the body mount won't pull through, i'd leave the quarters and the spare tire area alone, depending on your rules you could fold the rear quarters in and weld thm up but personally don't think its gonna make a difference. Good car for a imp subframe swap! Have fun these things are tanks if built right. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by KoryJr7 on Apr 30th, 2006, 8:04pm
Thanks plum, I have some road signs im thinking about using they should hold up? I wish i could change to a imp sub but rules say i cant . BUt she is getting a 76 newport bumper on the front. And another thing, i guy that knows his stuff about plymouths say to cut the main support beam on the roof half way up so the ass goes up and not down, is this right and would u take a hammer and smash it down all a long it after cutting it?
Thanks KOry Jr. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by PlumCrazy44 on Apr 30th, 2006, 8:18pm
I never seen a mopar go down unless it is a total rust bucket, definatly change the front bumper and add shocks if u can. I wouldn't cut anything, might even make the rear end bend up faster. Just chain or allthread or both the humps down thats where its going to bend in the back and decide which way it goes left right up or sideways lol. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Running a '75 fury wagon. Do you guys think I should bolt the body to the frame in the rear?? Never ran a wagon before, but it just made some sense to me. Will it keep the body from peeling from the frame?? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dm440c on Jun 29th, 2006, 11:30pm
seems to me that the most important thing is to connect the frame to the rear axle and keep those from separating Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by mopar71c on Jul 19th, 2006, 12:30pm
I have a 73 fury III wagon. I have shocks in the y's and the y's are plated. Our rules let us go from 6 in. in front of the firewall back the the center of the rear end for our cage. We can run kickers also. I'm also planning on chaining the humps, running all thread through the rear frame and the roof, and making the wagon full frame. What else could i do to make this wagon hard? It will be mostly runnig againts 70's gm wagons. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

With rules like that the car you've got will compete without a doubt........I kinda like those rules! Looks like you've got a real good idea on how to build it, not much anyone can add......Make sure you build a good leaf pack and clamp them good..... Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dsmracing on Jul 26th, 2006, 10:34am
well i stretched my 71 t&c back out (after it went up in the center) . if i chain the humps and weld all the seams back up do you guys think it will hold up for a couple of hits ? im mostly going to use the front to hit with . is there anything else that i might do to make it belly out instead of going up ? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dude25J on Jul 30th, 2006, 6:10pm
How far will the a$$ end go in, before it causes a big problum, if it is kinked over the humps. I plan on pulling it out but the rules are strict and the next demo is going to be big. Any suggestions on how to patch the frame and make it look good. Cant chain the humps and no frame connecters. I allready have bolts in the shock X member and close to the tail gate on the frame. The tail gate is welded up good and its not rusty in the floors. I also have a good set of leafs, 9 per side and 3 fliped with 4 clamps.
I was thinking that putting a crese in the back pillars would help get that tail gate to roll in or I might try to notch it. Any tips on this would be great.
Also would beating the spare tire area up into the car help like Ihave see on LTDs, or cut it out completely like on 4 cly fairmonts Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

well yes if you weld your seems and chain your humps than that sholud hold you rear in place long enough to go in but like you say it will belly. Connect your frames and it should be solid. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dsmracing on Aug 3rd, 2006, 10:07am
thanks dude ! the reason why i was asking is because when the car bent in the center it went sky high and lost the driveline !!! i would much rather it belly out than go up again !! have you ever tryed useing a driveline out of a impala (mid 70 w/cv joint) ? ive heard they work good . i run the chains just in front of the bump stops (leave them on !!) on the humps and pull the springs flat , mopar wagons get most of thier strength from the roof so i beg to differ on not chaining them because ive had one blow the humps and break the driveline with a stiff clamped spring pack ! also that little crossmember that your shocks bolt to , put a bolt on each side w/big flat washers . if you can plate the humps , do it , it really helps ! did i miss anything ? also DONT NOTCH , its not 80s gm junk !!!!!!! heres some pics of mine .

a Coronet is a B body midsize car, you'll need a better bumper up front and the back can be built using the tips in the rest of this wagons thread. SHould be a pretty easy build, really. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

it's a very good car after some improvements. Use the tips from this thread to buiild the back and the 73-79 B body thread to build the front and you'll be in good shape Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

i am getting a 77 newport wagon, and i know it is a sub frame, does it help or hinder it if I connect the frame together, and what else should I do to it Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

leave your deck lid in, and run as big of a roof sign as possible, wagons get their support fom the roof so add to it Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

Some people have been creative and used the rocker panel area to their advantage. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

no joke if you notch it , it will be junk ! notching is for 80s gm junk !!! read through here and youll see there are many differnt ways to build these cars and notching is NOT one of them ! Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

For a 77 t/c wagon would it make it a tougher car if I connect the sub frames together, and I 've read the strength of the car is in the roof and the floor, so would a large roof sign help on the roof, and would it be better to buy a new set of leaf springs or try to figure out how to flat stack a set Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dsmracing on Jan 27th, 2008, 9:45pm
oh yeh , it helps a bunch if you connect the subs ! the roof sign im not sure about , that would be an experiment to me . as far as the springs go id check to see what the max amount of springs is and then just build my own set . also put the max amount of clamps per side on those springs and that will help a bunch !!!! in the rear floor there is a removeable panel if you can get away with it weld it solid to the floor and then weld every seam inside the rear of the car that you possibly can where each piece of body panel comes together , once again if you can get away with it . hope this helps !

I got a 77 monaco wagon, does it help to notch the rear frame on these and how hard is to build a spring pack Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by moparkid17 on Feb 11th, 2008, 9:50pm
I wouldn't notch it from the start, I think you'd waste a good car. I notched my 74' after the 3rd run I believe and the only reason I did that was because I needed a spot for a relief because it was buckling the roof and it was coming down behind my head.
Building a leaf pack is pretty easy to do...........Chevy pickup springs work pretty well. Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

a 71 Coronet without the front bumper changed to a 74-up box bumper is as useless as tit$ on a bull

i would try chaining your humps and adding a few leafs, and if you can run your decklid just weld it in and cut a small hole into it for inspection Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks

ok guys I need some help I have a 73 Polara wagon that I ran in Oct 07 I welded the back lid down where the rear seat is and chained the humps. The car is super strong in th back but I have a problem.... the humps clapsed in the front and is workin their way through the back floor and the back end went down and curled the springs and tilited the front of the rearend up dropping the drive shaft. I was thinking about building me a leaf pack and putting it under it but should I cut out the welded deck lid because it almost is like its to strong and bending the car in the wrong places? any help or advice would be appreciated.
Pics of it are here

i looked through all the pages and didnt see much on a 79 wagon. are they any good? i might be able to get a 79 plymoth wagon. i dont know much about mopars.. are they comparable to the 79-81 mopar sedans? Re: Wagon Tips and Tricks
Post by dsmracing on Jun 11th, 2008, 01:57am
not sure but my assumption would be its a k-frame car like a volaire or fury am i correct ? if so from the little experince ive had with them build the rear like any mopar wagon but the front should have every seam welded (with fenders off) where each panel or seam comes together and the pucks pulled from under the k-frame and it welded up solid . not much help as im still learning on these myself but the fronts welded up every possible place that can be they seem to be pretty tough . dm440c has run a couple i think so you might pm him .
hope this helps a little .
