Derby season approaches rapidly, and I now have two kids who want to do it.
There's only one not-so-small problem. My 3-year-old has a head with a 22-inch (almost 56 cm) circumference. For reference, that's above the 50th percentile for a full-grown man. He gets it from me, for sure. It's not a medical defect; just a genetic thing, for better or worse.
The problem is that kid-size helmets max out at 22 inches. As in, the "Youth XL" size shows that it's best for 21.5 - 22 inches. The "Adult S" size shows 21-22 inches, and "Adult M" is naturally 22-23 or whatever each manufacturer presents. I've checked a few and his head circumference seems to put him pretty squarely in the "Adult M" category, at least if we want the helmet to last him more than this one season.
So the question - is there any danger in putting a kid in an adult helmet, and if yes, what is that danger? (I tested him with his brother's Youth XL helmet last night and while it does fit him, it does indeed require more force to get it on and off compared to my 5-year-old's head, which measured at 21.5 inches.)
What would you do if you were in my shoes? (Assume that a racing-style helmet is a must-have.)

Alot of kids around us just wear regular bicycle helmets for power wheels. No need for anything more unless they want to because dad wears a full face style.

But I got my older son a racing-style helmet, which he thought was super cool, and I may have painted myself into a corner with this because now my younger son will want the same thing. I have a bike helmet for him but he's going to want the same type of helmet that my older son has.

The hits even with 18v batteries aren't enough to worry about neck damage even with an adult helmet. I wouldn't think another thought about it. And if your worried buy an atv/mx neck brace for him like we use in actual cars.

Late t the party on this but I'd go with a bike helmet , The added weight of a regular helmet may be too much strain on the little neck ( and I can relate to the big head thing , always told my daughters they had a five head instead of a forehead
