Hello all I am new to derbying and building my first vic this year. I was wondering if its easier to weld in a cage or bolt in and how much material will I neeed to do this. I found a 20 foot section of 3x3 1/4 in thick tubing will this be enough?

Weld in is easier. I dont suggest spending the time to make it bolt it until you figure out what design you like best. What rules for your cage are you building to?

I weld mine in every year I say I'm going to make it bolt in an time comes I get running behind so just weld it. In less it gets bent I reuse my cage.

60” cage rule around here...so 5’x4=20’...+ 10” down bar(x2)..+ roll over bar + center bar to mount shifter....you’ll need some more tubing

We have an extreme cage, needed way more than 20 feet. I think if you go for a pretty simple cage 40 foot would be enough

You dont necessarily need material that big for every component of your cage, but 20 feet will just barely be enough for 2 door bars and dash bar and seat bar. If you want or need more pieces to your cage than that, you will need to acquire more material. My Vegas cage had everything from 2x2 1/4 wall, 2.5x2.5 3/16, 3x3 1/4 and 2x6 1/4 in it to help maximize cost to strength.

Same, in our spring x cars we have 2x6x1/4, 4x4x3/8’s, 2x4x1/4, 2x3x1/4, 2x2x1/4, 1 1/2x1x1/4, 2 1/2x2x1/4. Of course that’s way more than what’s really necessary. All depends on how much time you want to put into it

Since you can't have down tubes. Remember every where it's welded to will only help hold car straight. Max out your side bar length. My stock show let's me go to the hump sheet metal so about 6ft. I put mine inside the doors so it's welded into each pillar whether I got down tubes or not. Seems to make it easier to weld. All bolt in cages I've saw still has straps welded to body

Easier to weld a cage in compared to making a bolt in cage, but my bolt in cage goes together much faster then I can weld one in. I can take it out for the next car way faster as well. How much material you need is subject to side bar length, down bars, and if you add gussets, gas tank protector, or a center bar. 20 feet would be enough for the perimeter cages I have built without gas tank protector, down bars, gussets, or center bar.

I have plates to build a bolt in cage but never have enough time to build one. I end up welding them in. Last car I ran I ended up sending cage in car to shredder. My question is how is everyone cutting them out without destroying the material? I use torches and sawzall to get mine out.

Torch the metal it's welded to then grind the bits off

Would take us 4 days to do a rough job on ours with all the gussets and what not. Would rather leave it in, not easy getting big bars out. We save some small easy stuff but we get really good prices on new steel
