I've now had 2 th400, both caddy ones, that will only shift into gear if you turn the motor off and put it in gear and then fire it back up. The first one did it to me in a derby and never quit doing it. The second one did it in a 75 I picked up today and after driving it a little bit its acting normal now.

Both trans were fine with no odd smells.

This is completely on the other side of the spectrum, but I have a quad that does this, put it into reverse and you got to shut it off to take it back out and select another gear. Again not even the same thing but oddly enough kinda the same..haha weird

Check your vent. I have had a few funny issues cause of that. Bees and dust love that thing
