So, I have been wondering about this topic a lot lately and I am really curious to know everyone's opinions on the matter.
Lets say "Dave" has a mild build 355, something around 350-400 HP, nothing major but just enough to get the job done. He goes out and runs this engine all the time, its the only one he owns. It never gets hot or misses a beat.
"Dave" breaks a radiator down in the money spots, runs engine for 7-15 minutes without water or fan. Engine never looses power but a heat chirp starts 30 seconds before the engine gets shut off.
My biggest question here would be: How long is to long? How long can you run an engine hot and not have to worry about hurting the upper or lower end? Is it purely luck of the draw? Because I have seen motors so hot that they wont run any longer, then start up the next day with zero head or head gasket problems. Is "Dave" just being to paranoid? Engine replacement isn't an issue but would rather not go that route if possible.

compression test or refill it with water and let it run for a bit and see if oil starts changing color, prolly just a head gasket went bad if anything

Alot of variables in this. I have a buddy that has gotten engine so hot that it wouldn't turn over but it still just works the next time. I have had 2 400ish HP engines that once i got them hot enough to have a valve chirp in them it was time to go through the heads. Depends on what you have in for valve train and guides and how much you trust the engine.
Some internals are stronger than others so If "Dave" went cheap or maybe not with the right part for the "Job" in a sense that "Frank" did then ya one will not take the heat and survive.

Never bring anything to a derby that you are not willing to bring back home in pieces.

If it never got hot then i don't worry about it but if it ever gets hot at all (regardless how long) then ill pull it apart and check it regardless if it still ran ok or not. Unfortunately too many guys look at "how long it was hot" and yes...that matters to but most importantly what matters is the fact that it got hot period and that's all it takes to damage something. The time it was hot just hurts it that much more. $100-$120 for some gaskets and a couple hours time is a cheap piece of mind then "not knowing". Sometimes its been a waste of time and money and sometimes im glad i did check it cause you just never know and with the time, $, and work that goes into even a stock class car id rather be safe then sorry over some gaskets. JMO.

Just like 57 said... I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but my time and cars are far too valuable to take the chance of my drivetrain not making it to the end when I know there’s a possibility something may not be right....
Unless I’m putting it in a metric that may or may not last 10 minutes and I’m just seeing how much she’ll take, it pays for me to know exactly what I’m working with....
However, if you’re the guy who spends two days and $150 on a paint job but can’t afford a carb rebuild kit and “didn’t have time” to weld up spiders in the rear end, then yeah, I’d say go for it....

Never bring anything to a derby that you are not willing to bring back home in pieces. I don’t mind tearing it up, if I did, I would have shut it down the moment I lost a radiator. I am just trying to figure out what steps I need to take next. The last time I got it hot, I got it redone and come to find out, it was fine. My engine builder found nothing wrong.

Don’t be hating on metrics. Lol I ran it 7 minutes exactly after I broke the radiator.

If you're worried about overheating your engine, yoy shouldn't be derbying. My engine is squealing after every derby, but it always starts back up. I've broken plenty of temp gauges, that's why I don't run them anymore. Oil pressure I'd the only thing I worry about. Now, answer this. When it's down to the top 5, is Dave gonna shut his sh*t down because it's at 250* or is Dave gonna say f*ck that guy and fulltrack that a$$hole who wins every year?
