2017 GENERAL RULES:
1.) All entrants must hold a valid state driver’s license at the time of entry and day of show. All entrants must be 16 years or older. If entrant is under 18 years old, they must have a notarized release signed by parent or guardian.
2.) Each vehicle will present, at time of inspection, a valid state issued title OR legally notarized bill of sale for the vehicle, which must be in entrant’s name.
3.) Cars must be removed from grounds within 24 hours following the event or the car will be towed away at the owner’s expense.
4.) Remove all glass, fiberglass, headlights, taillights, trim, interior trailer hitches, etc. Cars must be swept clean. This must be done before you show up.
5.) All rear seats and floor decking must be removed. Any sharp or protruding fins must be cut off the vehicle.
6.) Standard safety belt, Z-90 approved helmet, and eye protection (face shield or safety glasses) are required.
7.) Long sleeve shirt and pants are required. No shorts allowed.
8.) All drivers must attend drivers’ meeting – the time and location to be announced.
9.) All driver doors must be painted white. Numbers are optional. If more than one vehicle has the same number, second car registered and inspected may be asked to change or alter number.
10.) All cars must have brakes before inspection.
11.) Absolutely no hotrodding in the pit area or staging area will be tolerated. Driver and car will be disqualified.
12.) No alcohol allowed on the fairgrounds or in the pit area! Any driver or crew member found drinking alcohol will disqualify the car and they will be removed from the fairgrounds and all money will be forfeited. If necessary, Lorain County Fair reserves the right to conduct alcohol testing and to search any vehicle entering the infield.
13.) Absolutely no two-way radios allowed.
14.) To protest a particular vehicle, a $200.00 (cash only) protest fee must be made within 15 minutes of the start of the show and personally presented to the Head Track Official by a driver that is entered in the show and has their car present. Only drivers may file a protest. If you are caught cheating, you will forfeit any entry fee, money won, or trophy. The protesting driver must state where he/she believes the accused car has violated the rules. If legitimate evidence is found, the accused car will be disqualified and the protesting driver will receive a full refund of the protesting fee. The next appropriate vehicle will be re-inspected and receive the appropriate forfeited prize money. If no legitimate evidence is found, the protesting driver forfeits the $200.00 protest fee and protested driver keeps the money. Cars may be scoped and drilled prior to and/or following events. We want to present a fair show for all competitors.
15.) All feature money winning cars may be re-inspected after feature to confirm car is legal. All heat winners are subject to re-inspection. All cars entered are subject to inspection by Derby Officials at anytime. If you are caught cheating, you forfeit any entry fee, money won, or trophy. Drivers are responsible for the actions of their crew and anyone by their car. Derby Officials have final say always…period.
COMPETITION RULES:
1.) One-minute rule will be used at all times. Cars unable to start in one minute will be disqualified.
2.) Wheels over the barrier will be subject to disqualifications.
3.) After a car is disabled or in violation of the one-minute rule, the driver will remain with the vehicle with his helmet on and fastened.
4.) No car shall enter or exit the arena after the green flag and before the checkered flag.
5.) All cars causing the red flag shall be re-inspected before further competition.
6.) Sticks will be affixed to cars and used to show when a car is out of competition.
7.) Drivers will not extend any part of his/her body outside of car at any time while heat or feature is running. Driver will not exit their car during caution flag to inspect or work on their car for any reason. You will be disqualified.
8.) No driver’s door or head-on hits will be allowed. (This will be explained at the drivers’ meeting.)
9.) NO SANDBAGGING! If an Official believes any driver is sandbagging or laying back to gain an advantage, the Officials will black flag the car and the Derby will be stopped and the car will be painted with an orange X – meaning this is your only warning.
10.) Drivers MUST wear crash helmets with eye protection.
11.) Derby Officials and the Fair Board reserve the right to disqualify anyone. DISQUALIFICATION MEANS A FORFEIT OF ALL PAID FEES. All decisions by the Derby Officials are final!!!
12.) The entrant ONLY will be permitted in the inspection area. Please leave crew and family at your pit!!

PURE STOCK RULES
Any 1980 and newer stock, hard top sedan, or station wagon may be used.
All general and competition rules used for Lorain County Fair derby apply.
Hoods, doors, and trunks may be wired or chained in six places, double strands of wire, sheet metal to sheet metal, two of six wires may go to bumper.
Car must be stock!!
No engine swaps!!
Headers and floor shifters are not allowed for stock class. Must be factory key switch and shifter.
No welding on car except driver’s door and bumper shocks. Any 80’s bumper may be used.
Seat bar is recommended.
Tires must be stock or snow type tire – 6 ply limit. No loaded tires.
No Protector
All general and competition rules apply
VEHICLE TYPE:
Any hardtop, two or four door, automobile, or station wagon is permitted. No Chrysler Imperials, trucks, jeeps, ambulances, hearses, limousines, 4x4’s, or utility vehicles.
INTERIOR AND BODY:
Any battery, any size permitted. Must be securely mounted and covered. Push button and switches are permitted. No loose wiring. Electric fuel pump switch must be clearly marked.
Original fuel tank must be removed and replaced with a marine type steel tank and securely mounted and covered. No plastic tanks permitted. Approximately 8 gallons of fuel per heat. All fuel lines must be securely clamped and leak proof. Any car leaking fuel will result in disqualification. Electric fuel pumps are permitted.
All doors may be welded solid, chained, or wired.
A four bar interior cage is highly recommended for safety in the driver compartment. All bars or tubing may be no larger than 4” in diameter. Bars must be sheet metal to sheet metal only. No vertical bars running to floor of frame. Front bar must be at least 5” from the center of the firewall. A kicker bar may run from front bar to back of distributor protector, but there must be at least 1½” between them. No exceptions….you will cut! No cage or components can be welded to frame. The back bar cannot be any further back than 6” from driver’s seat. Back bar must be at least 12” off of center hump on the floor and floor pan. Side bars can be inside the doors or inside the car. Side bars cannot go past the firewall and any further back past the back bar than 12”. Four gussets no bigger than 4” may be welded at four corners of cage. Front and back bars may have mounting plates no bigger than 6” x 6” welded to ends of tubes to weld tubes to doors, not floor. A rollover/halo bar no bigger in diameter than 4” may be used and must be welded to cage only. Must run straight across and not be bolted in any way to roof.
Rollover bar is permitted for your safety. Must tie into rear seat bar only and be straight up and down above driver.
Two locations of safety must be placed in driver’s windshield (wire, chain, steel 4” maximum). Sheet metal to sheet metal only and one rear window bar is permitted. May not protrude through deck lid. May not

attach to floor. No additional bars added to cage (unless noted). All cage/bar material must be structural and securely welded for your safety.
Gas tank protectors are not permitted. No kickers permitted anywhere.
It is highly recommended you use a 24” x 24” roof sign displaying your number clearly.
Hood and deck lid or tailgate must be fastened shut with wire, chain, or banding. Maximum six locations only. Sheet metal to sheet metal only. It is permitted to run wire/chain/banding from bumper to core support in two of the six locations. Hood and deck lid or tailgate must be open for inspection!
CHASSIS AND FRAME:
No frame swaps permitted (example: Chrysler frame on GM, etc.). Frame must be make to make. Frames cannot be reinforced or strengthened in any way whatsoever! Frames will be checked thoroughly. Officials’ decisions are final! Pre-ran frames may be repaired at a minimum. Repairs are only permitted where needed. Notching frames are permitted.
No tilting of frame. No frame seam welding. No shortening of frames.
No hump plates permitted. Rear end may be chained to humps.
Trailer hitches must be removed. No special bumpers.
Any year bumper permitted. Factory bumper shocks and brackets must be used or bumper may be hardnosed to frame with single bead of weld. No added metal. Bumper may be chained to frame with single loop of chain. Bumper may be welded to shock with single bead of weld. No added metal. Shock may be welded to frame with single bead of weld. No added metal.
Original body bolts and hardware must remain in factory appearance. Broken/rusted bolts may be replaced with stock size bolts and hardware. No added body mounts. No welding washers to frame/body. Factory spacing must be present. Do not torque body tight to frame.
Suspension must be factory. No leaf conversions. Factory leafed cars must retain factory leafs. No added clamps. No solid shackles. Coil springs may be welded or wired in place.
Front suspension may be welded solid in one of three ways only: (1) Weld a-arm down. Front side only. Single bead of weld. No added metal; (2) 2” wide x 3/16” thick strap from lower a-arm to frame on back side only; (3) 2” wide x 3/16” thick strap from upper a-arm to frame. Abuse it and lose it!
Factory OEM steering components only. No aftermarket spindles, ball joints, or tie rods. Aftermarket steering columns are permitted.
PRE-RAN CARS:
May use no more than two fix-a-plates, maximum size 3” x 3”. Plates cannot overlap or touch. May only be used on damaged areas. Can only weld two sides of square plate.
Rips and tears in body panels may be spot welded back together. Abuse it and lose it! Officials’ decisions are final!
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION:
Any motor/trans combination is permitted.
No engine protectors of any kind are permitted. No distributor protectors of any kind permitted.
Pulley protector is permitted. Must have clearance with sway bar before and after derby! Must not attach to any other part of car/motor.
Engine cradle only is permitted. Must bolt directly to motor and frame only. No added bolts or mounts. No welding to frame. Must not reinforce frame in any way. Motor and transmission mounts may be chained or welded so long as it does not strengthen frame in any way.
Shifting linkage may be altered. Aftermarket shifters are permitted. Air cleaner mandatory. Transmission coolers are permitted and must be placed behind driver’s seat. All lines must be securely clamped and leak proof. Burp tube is recommended on transmission dipstick tube to reroute overflow and prevent fire.
Slider shafts permitted.
TIRES, RADIATOR, AND FAN:
Maximum 16” tires. No liquid tires. Tubes permitted. No screws in tires, no beadlocks, and no studded tires permitted. No solid wheels permitted. Wheel weights must be removed. No split rims. Valve stem protectors permitted.
Radiators must remain in stock location. Steel clutch fans must be covered.
Weld-in centers are permitted to acquire desired bolt pattern.

SUB-COMPACT RULES

BUILDING:
All cars must remain stock, unless specified in these rules. All cars must be factory two wheel drive, 4 or 6 cylinder, and wheelbase must not exceed 109". Strip interior 100%! You can leave in passenger seat, dash, KEY START RECOMMENDED, remove airbags! AMC Spirits, Pacers, Gremlins are permitted.
WELDING:
One bar behind seat, 12” x 12” inner door plates, no larger than 6" diameter pipe. A rollover bar is strongly advised. Four bar cage is also advised.
DOORS/TRUNK/TAILGATES:
Outside only 3" wide x ¼” thick strapping both outside front doors. Can be reinforced 6” past the door seams.
BUMPERS:
Can be from any compact car, any full size bumpers cut to width of car. They must be bolted on at the factory location, ½” bolts, 2" washers maximum size. You can wire your bumpers to the trunk lid in two places and the radiator support in two places with #9 wire.
TIRES:
No tractor treads and no studded tires on the front. You can glue, screw, double and stem protection is allowed. Remove wheel weights.
WINDSHIELD:
Must be removed. Must have two places of #9 wire, banding, strapping, or chain in windshield area to protect driver and passenger. Mount this from roof to the cowl panel. It must not be attached to the hood.
BATTERY:
Must be mounted inside the car, all parts of battery must be covered with a non-flammable material.
HOODS:
Can be secured in six places. Two strand #9 banding or chain.
FUEL TANKS:
Tanks must be made of steel. A four-point hold down bolted to floor with a minimum of a 2" washer on the underside of car. All hoses must be double clamped at all connections. Electric fuel pumps must be operated by a switch that the passenger can shut off in case of a fire. I'll paint switch during inspection. Stock systems will simply use the key.

YOUTH DERBY RULES
YOUTH – 12-15 years – please check rules for any changes
Lorain County Fair is excited to host its Youth Derby again, which will teach youth how to strip cars out, build a car to rules, and be a good sport when they win or lose.
Upon arrival, a notarized parental consent form must be filled out or you will not be allowed to participate. One parent must be present with valid I.D. A notary will be present to notarize the entry forms. A PARENT OR ADULT MUST RIDE WITH THE DRIVER. This is for instructional purposes, as well as a possible emergency situation.

Original fuel tank must be removed and replaced with a marine type steel tank and securely mounted and covered. No plastic tanks permitted. Approximately 8 gallons of fuel per heat. All fuel lines must be securely clamped and leak proof. Any car leaking fuel will result in disqualification. Electric fuel pumps are permitted.
All doors may be welded solid, chained, or wired.
A four bar interior cage is highly recommended for safety in the driver compartment. All bars or tubing may be no larger than 4” in diameter. Bars must be sheet metal to sheet metal only. No vertical bars running to floor of frame. Front bar must be at least 5” from the center of the firewall. A kicker bar may run from front bar to back of distributor protector, but there must be at least 1½” between them. No exceptions….you will cut! No cage or components can be welded to frame. The back bar cannot be any further back than 6” from driver’s seat. Back bar must be at least 12” off of center hump on the floor and floor pan. Side bars can be inside the doors or inside the car. Side bars cannot go past the firewall and any further back past the back bar than 12”. Four gussets no bigger than 4” may be welded at four corners of cage. Front and back bars may have mounting plates no bigger than 6” x 6” welded to ends of tubes to weld tubes to doors, not floor. A rollover/halo bar no bigger in diameter than 4” may be used and must be welded to cage only. Must run straight across and not be bolted in any way to roof.
Rollover bar is permitted for your safety. Must tie into rear seat bar only and be straight up and down above driver.
Two locations of safety must be placed in driver’s windshield (wire, chain, steel 4” maximum). Sheet metal to sheet metal only and one rear window bar is permitted. May not protrude through deck lid. May not

attach to floor. No additional bars added to cage (unless noted). All cage/bar material must be structural and securely welded for your safety.
Gas tank protectors are not permitted. No kickers permitted anywhere.
It is highly recommended you use a 24” x 24” roof sign displaying your number clearly.
Hood and deck lid or tailgate must be fastened shut with wire, chain, or banding. Maximum six locations only. Sheet metal to sheet metal only. It is permitted to run wire/chain/banding from bumper to core support in two of the six locations. Hood and deck lid or tailgate must be open for inspection!
CHASSIS AND FRAME:
No frame swaps permitted (example: Chrysler frame on GM, etc.). Frame must be make to make. Frames cannot be reinforced or strengthened in any way whatsoever! Frames will be checked thoroughly. Officials’ decisions are final! Pre-ran frames may be repaired at a minimum. Repairs are only permitted where needed. Notching frames are permitted.
No tilting of frame. No frame seam welding. No shortening of frames.
No hump plates permitted. Rear end may be chained to humps.
Trailer hitches must be removed. No special bumpers.
Any year bumper permitted. Factory bumper shocks and brackets must be used or bumper may be hardnosed to frame with single bead of weld. No added metal. Bumper may be chained to frame with single loop of chain. Bumper may be welded to shock with single bead of weld. No added metal. Shock may be welded to frame with single bead of weld. No added metal.
Original body bolts and hardware must remain in factory appearance. Broken/rusted bolts may be replaced with stock size bolts and hardware. No added body mounts. No welding washers to frame/body. Factory spacing must be present. Do not torque body tight to frame.
Suspension must be factory. No leaf conversions. Factory leafed cars must retain factory leafs. No added clamps. No solid shackles. Coil springs may be welded or wired in place.
Front suspension may be welded solid in one of three ways only: (1) Weld a-arm down. Front side only. Single bead of weld. No added metal; (2) 2” wide x 3/16” thick strap from lower a-arm to frame on back side only; (3) 2” wide x 3/16” thick strap from upper a-arm to frame. Abuse it and lose it!
Factory OEM steering components only. No aftermarket spindles, ball joints, or tie rods. Aftermarket steering columns are permitted.
PRE-RAN CARS:
May use no more than two fix-a-plates, maximum size 3” x 3”. Plates cannot overlap or touch. May only be used on damaged areas. Can only weld two sides of square plate.
Rips and tears in body panels may be spot welded back together. Abuse it and lose it! Officials’ decisions are final!
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION:
Any motor/trans combination is permitted.
No engine protectors of any kind are permitted. No distributor protectors of any kind permitted.
Pulley protector is permitted. Must have clearance with sway bar before and after derby! Must not attach to any other part of car/motor.
Engine cradle only is permitted. Must bolt directly to motor and frame only. No added bolts or mounts. No welding to frame. Must not reinforce frame in any way. Motor and transmission mounts may be chained or welded so long as it does not strengthen frame in any way.
Shifting linkage may be altered. Aftermarket shifters are permitted. Air cleaner mandatory. Transmission coolers are permitted and must be placed behind driver’s seat. All lines must be securely clamped and leak proof. Burp tube is recommended on transmission dipstick tube to reroute overflow and prevent fire.
Slider shafts permitted.
TIRES, RADIATOR, AND FAN:
Maximum 16” tires. No liquid tires. Tubes permitted. No screws in tires, no beadlocks, and no studded tires permitted. No solid wheels permitted. Wheel weights must be removed. No split rims. Valve stem protectors permitted.
Radiators must remain in stock location. Steel clutch fans must be covered.
Weld-in centers are permitted to acquire desired bolt pattern.

All cars must remain stock, unless specified in these rules. All cars must be factory two wheel drive, 4 or 6 cylinder, and wheelbase must not exceed 109". Strip interior 100%! You can leave in passenger seat, dash, KEY START RECOMMENDED, remove airbags! AMC Spirits, Pacers, Gremlins are permitted.
WELDING:
One bar behind seat, 12” x 12” inner door plates, no larger than 6" diameter pipe. A rollover bar is strongly advised. Four bar cage is also advised.
DOORS/TRUNK/TAILGATES:
Outside only 3" wide x ¼” thick strapping both outside front doors. Can be reinforced 6” past the door seams.
BUMPERS:
Can be from any compact car, any full size bumpers cut to width of car. They must be bolted on at the factory location, ½” bolts, 2" washers maximum size. You can wire your bumpers to the trunk lid in two places and the radiator support in two places with #9 wire.
TIRES:
No tractor treads and no studded tires on the front. You can glue, screw, double and stem protection is allowed. Remove wheel weights.
WINDSHIELD:
Must be removed. Must have two places of #9 wire, banding, strapping, or chain in windshield area to protect driver and passenger. Mount this from roof to the cowl panel. It must not be attached to the hood.
BATTERY:
Must be mounted inside the car, all parts of battery must be covered with a non-flammable material.
HOODS:
Can be secured in six places. Two strand #9 banding or chain.
FUEL TANKS:
Tanks must be made of steel. A four-point hold down bolted to floor with a minimum of a 2" washer on the underside of car. All hoses must be double clamped at all connections. Electric fuel pumps must be operated by a switch that the passenger can shut off in case of a fire. I'll paint switch during inspection. Stock systems will simply use the key.

Lorain County Fair is excited to host its Youth Derby again, which will teach youth how to strip cars out, build a car to rules, and be a good sport when they win or lose.
Upon arrival, a notarized parental consent form must be filled out or you will not be allowed to participate. One parent must be present with valid I.D. A notary will be present to notarize the entry forms. A PARENT OR ADULT MUST RIDE WITH THE DRIVER. This is for instructional purposes, as well as a possible emergency situation.
BUILDING:
