I'm running a 1974 ford half ton what's some tips imo a half ton will get eaten alive without a lot of welding, if you can I would change the rear to a dana 60 and weld everything that touches the frame, hard nose it with a solid bumper and try to get as much height out of the front as possible.

Just because it's a half ton doesn't mean it's weak. When I built my buddies promod truck, we used the front half of a 74 F150 4x4 because it was almost fully boxed and a much better frame than his 78 F350 2wd frame. I would defiantly put a leaf spring front axle in it though. We used a 10 bolt from an 80s Chevy. The spring perch width is almost the same and we used the mounts off the Chevy frame as well.

My buddy built a half ton '81 Dodge that folded like a pop can and ever since then I've been against half tons. No offense but to me a 3/4 ton is much stronger both body and frame wise.

We joined the frames at the tranny crossmember. The 78 F250 2wd frame had the engine crossmember under the middle of the engine and the front of the frame was like 2 foot long of just open c channel. The 74 F150 4wd frame has the engine crossmember under the harmonic balancer of the engine which means the front of the frame is much shorter and was fully boxed except for the last few inches.
On 70s Ford's 2wd vs 4wd means much more than 1/2 or 1 ton
Also there is absolutely no difference between the bodies on 1/2 to 1 tons.
