1. Your insurance normally only covers the stands and basic liability on you. Make sure they sign waivers. If they get hurt it's on them. 2. Cowley County Fair in Winfield, Ks 2013 event is a good one to use as an example. Rules are online under that fair page. (It was the first year of a rebuilding year. 2012 had six cars 2013 had 20. Looks like 2014 will have 40-50 with the interest people are talking about). Simple bolt and chain rules. The cars were heavily inspected by a team of six guys (all inspected the same on each car) and all of them were knowledgeable in the auto field and building derby cars. Well enforced rules will bring more cars the next year. (Promoters tend to let stuff slide trying to fill the field but fail to realize this hurts car count for the next year) 3. You've gotta pay to get people to play. We will give the pit pass money back to the driver's when they place. The more money in the pot the sweeter the field. 4. We brought in "officials" from outside the area to judge the event. They tend to be non-biased and could careless about who the hometown hero is and the buddy system. 5. Before and after the show...walk around the pits and talk to the driver's. They will give you positive and negative feedback on your show. 6. Advertise advertise advertise. Social media and forums are free. Push it. 7. Expect to loose money the first year and try to break even the second or third year. Fill the void with local business sponsorships.

Thanks for the great advice and tips! I will defiantly check out the Winfield KS page. I like the idea of giving the pit back the money if the driver places. For a first time Derby though, what is a GOOD 1st place prize? how far down do you place 1-3? Is their a general waiver out their, or do we ask a lawyer to write us up one? We have a good Lawyer here who would probably do it for nothing just to see this derby up and running!
