that's great but don't want to go that route is ther a way to wire a chevy hei module . like I do for the ford duraspark2 distbiturs There's a diagram on derbythis.com. I run the ecu on 2 of my setups and a resistorless points on another but my 440 hotrod has msd. HEI puts out 5X the voltage of points and (assuming you don't have ridiculous compression/clearance) you can take your .035 gap to .055. I've read some David Vizard articles where he tested how it improves performance, starting etc. esp in higher compression engines. This may not be right but kinda makes sense to me-I've heard that as long as you're not running an alternator which is putting out 14 volts the points usually won't fry with a resistorless 12 volt system.

My last post was kinda unorganized.-Anyway, I don't think HEI will improve performance by itself but by increasing the spark and gap it allows higher octane gas and higher compressions etc. I personally don't think that helps much with a derby car but certainly street and race cars will benefit.

I had started to write it out a couple of days ago to supplement your first post but I honestly get tired of writing the same stuff over and over sometimes. The only other factor worth mentioning for this application is that the advance curve characteristics have a whole lot more to do with how a stock type gasoline engine "feels" than the secondary voltage does. But I have had frustrating experiences in the past attempting to explain this sort of thing and it gives me a headache whenever this topic gets going...

IDK anything about Mopars but I just bought one of these HEI distributors off Ebay for my 318. It is about the same size as the factory distributor that I removed. It is not even close to being as big as a GM HEI. I have not wired it up yet but it dropped right in without any adapters. I did a visual comparison to the old one and everything looks the same externally. It has an internal HEI ignition module built in and requires an external coil. I dont know much yet but I will in a month or so when I fire it up. How Much? How did you end up wiring it?

Got a procomp hei for my sbm off ebay the other day, and was wondering what your guys thoughts about them we're?
I plan on switching out modules with the MSD Digital Heat module with revlimiter.

I have one of those, all I did was route the positive and negatives from the distributor to the coil, respectively. Then splice into the positive leg with a wire that you run to battery positive (through a switch if you prefer). That's it.

I've read where some manufactures say up to .055 but I go ~.045 and index the plugs by filing the side electrode.

I put the skip white HEI in my lean burn 318.(out of a 86 fifth ave) I wired it just like Dan just stated. I installed NGK 4554 plugs and set the gap at 45. I also installed a 4bbl intake and a Edelbrock 1405 with a 4x4 kit. I have not derbied it yet but it is screaming during testing.

there is nothing unusual about Lean Burn engines as far as the engine's internals go. The engine doesn't care what ignition system you stick on it, it only cares that the system works.
