Wanted to do a lot of things as a kid. Right now I’m a traveling operating room nurse. How does that work out with derby’s It really doesn’t lol I run like a derby every year to every other year. I stay more local to home so an hour to two hours away. I’ve got two kiddos so unless I’m on call I’m home. Makes for a lot of long days and not much building time. Been doing it for 3 years. If you want to win anymore you gotta sacrifice something. Our derby group has a work problem lol

Growing up wanted to be an engineer or architect. Got to college and found out it was way too much calculus, and switched to environmental science. Now I've been teaching high school special ed and coaching 3 sports for the last 5 years. Don't get much time to build anymore except for July...

Grew up above a cheese factory that my grandpa started in 1960.(literally) Learned what hard work was from my gramps and dad. Found out what derby was from the maintenance guys building a car in our plants shop. Also dated a girl that dad owned a junkyard and they derby too. Always wanted to keep the family business alive. Did schooling for welding/maintenance/mechanics. Was 25 employees making roughly 50,000 lbs of cheese a day when i graduated high school. Currently my brother and I own/operate the business and have 60 employees and do roughly 120,000 of cheese a day. Grandpa passed away last summer and Dad is still around everyday.

Do you still build cars at work lol I started out building in that same shop. But sucked cause wasted 2 hours every night moving all the stuff out of the way and cleaning up and putting all the stuff back for the next day of work. Didn't have a lot of tools either. I now have my own shop and my house which are very close. I can hear the phone ring over the intercom at work and my brother is 1/4 mile to the west. We run 24 hours a day and have no night maintenance so we get called a lot.

Mechanic for an electrical utility company. I wanted to be a teacher growing up. I went to a community college to learn auto mechanics so I could work my way through my bachelors, but once I got into the utility company, kind of lost interest in teaching. The apple doesn't seem to have fallen far from the tree though because my dad started out as a mechanic for a utility company, and my grandpa retired from a utility company as a mechanic.

Growing up my brother had a wrecker service and that's what I wanted to do. Out of high school I worked in a few factories and moonlighted with the tow truck.Shop by my house always had derby cars for the local fair and as a kid I think I spent half my time around them, finally building and driving for about 20 years until my body couldn't take it. Worked as a labor foreman for a construction company for 16 years until the stress about killed me. 4 years ago I took a step back behind the scenes and now drive truck and help run the shop for a plumbing and HVAC contractor.

All I wanted to do as a kid was motor sports or automotive stunt work. As far as that goes, went in circles for a season and in a straight line for a couple seasons. Then my uncle let me jump into a used up derby car. Been doing that since 1999. Looking at the next chapter before too long.
Done all kinds of work over the years from wrenching to farming to construction to trucking to cooking to janitorial to etc., etc. Spent the last decade living in a gig economy...burning up about 100 hours a week as a part time farm hand, part time construction hand, part time trucking, part time pizza delivery dude, and filling the rest playing with junk, which I've been doing since iron was $20/ton...back when it took a skill set and work ethic to make money at it.
Got hit with a series of hefty health problems last year, kind of forcing me into a major slow down, slapping me in the face with "You're not 21 any more!" 50 is around the corner with a lot of off road miles in the rear view, so now I'm just doing the pizza thing (because it's fun, easy, consistent and pays decent), playing with junk, and cut the rest loose, with just a handful of derbies left in me.
