I’ve broke a couple of these internally before, and I was wondering if there’s a stronger steering box, that is a direct bolt up...I’m not allowed to change the mounting location of the steering box. Kinda a long shot, but figured that I’d ask you guys. I need power steering, and Hydro steer is out of the question.

How have exactly are you breaking the boxes? Are you running powersteering?. Ive been told the caddy box is the same box as a standard old iron GM with a different pitman arm, but Ive never verified that.

Impala and BOP steering boxes are the same as caddy, just different pitman arm. Believe you can turn the pitman arm 180 and be in business. Parts can break, but if it's a repeat failure the same every time and it is happening often, make sure you are running power steering with good fluid, and depending how your steering column is mounted along with other steering components that can cause issues as well. Parts need to be oriented correctly to prevent bind, and if using the steering column as a kicker that can cause more harm as well.

Thanks for verifying that information. I've never had to change one to start and Ive have a pile of used Caddy steering stuff Ive never had to try a standard GM box.

Also put something to stop spindles from over steering when hit or driving hard...

I’ve been running power steering and it just might be bad luck that I’ve broken them...I haven’t taken them apart to inspect what has broken internally, but I’ve been told that it’s most likely the worm gear...I’ve never tried to rebuild a steering box and I’m not entirely sure how they’re built. Is a BOP stronger internally, and worth swapping out?!?

We don’t usually have issues with boxes but 1 Chevy box we use blew apart internally and actually blew a casting out or something of that nature. The 2 other boxes just usually twisted the splines

They get broke on caddies all the time, the gm boxes are the same with 180 degree pitman. steering stops do help but some of the best builders/drivers I know break them every run. 53 caddies ran bakken derby last yr and about half broke. I dont think its because theyre weak, the cars themselves are so damn tough they last through helacious beatings and with all that weight somethings gotta give

I’m sure track shock and inertia is rough on them. Blizzard bash is probably the worst track for everyone, all types of boxes have issues there especially since we can’t run hydro

Solid tire, spindle, ball joint, etc, weak point really is the steering box and the nut behind the wheel.

150lbs wheels, 10,000lbs cars, nothing is happy down there. We’ll have to be there Tuesday-Monday so if nothing else it’ll definitely be a long week for the hut behind the wheel
