Picking up a 75 Dart Sport that previously housed a 225 six. Just curious on thoughts for engine. I have Chevy 3.8 and 4.3 as well as Ford 2.3. The sticky point may be oil pan and clearing steering components. Any recommendations appreciated.

I'll be looking at that soon enough with a couple of pre 73 Valiants.

I’m guessing a 75 is probably a little different, but it was “interesting” getting the pan on a 2.3 to fit in boom’s 66. Did you guys use a front sump or rear sump pan? My cradle is for a rear sump.

I used a front sump 2.3. I didn't have a cradle when I built that car. Would have made life easier probably. I'll have to see if I can dig up a pic or 2. Trust me, it got interesting and wouldn't recommend doing it again. On the driver side the steering gear is in the way real bad so I ended up going in front of it off of the p.s. bracket for my engine mount.
I'm not sure rear sump would work with the way the steering is. I ended up heating the idler and pitman to get it down and I think it still rubbed the starter sometimes.

Didn't really want to go out and find a slant six to fit the thing when I have other engines, but it sounds like it might save a lot of headaches. Or maybe we'll just set everything up higher in order to clear stuff, it's not like I'm terrible worried about center of gravity or hood fitting.

Its possible to put other stuff in one, but some fabrication will be involved. The biggest headache is the steering gear.

You think a rear sump would be easier or harder? What is it that would kill it for a rear sump? We have full cradle with for rear sump 2.3 and just lowers and non mid-plate DP's for 4.3's. Could probably come up with something else if needed like a Buick 3.8 that has the sump in the middle of the pan. If we are not using a full cradle or a DP, we can run kickers to the back of the a-arms. Rather not use a straight 6 for the length factor. You think these could be short nosed, like a fox body, and some others?

I considered the Buick 3.8 as well for that very reason. But a couple drinks later a friend and I were discussing 2-stroke options, so we decided it was probably best to stop with dumb ideas before things got any worse...

Initial thought involved a 600cc+ snowmobile engine and a Saginaw....

Granted, these cars are few and few between these days, and if you have 108" max wheelbase to deal with, the Valiant has to be 72 & older, and the Dart has to be a wagon. That being said, how about a permanent discussion thread for them?

You think these could be short nosed, like a fox body, and some others? Mid sump could be the easiest option. Like I said, idk about a rear sump because of the center link. Front sump with a cradle might be fine if you can fab mounts to engine cross member right off the cradle behind pulley protector. It was kinda snug even without a cradle though. It was like 2014-15 when I built that car so some of the details are a little foggy. Short nosing could be a good way to go and would be very easy to do with how straight everything is A-arm forward. I probably would have but with our rules we can only run 5" shocks instead of 10" when shortening so its not really worth it. I don't think a sticky would be bad. With how wheelbase rules have changed I wouldn't be surprised if more of these come out of the wood work. I'd really like to come across a sport/Duster. I think with that big rear pillar and the way the quarters are the back could go a lot better than the sedans.
