Out of curiosity, has anybody tangled with a 5.3 vortec (LM7)? I have them readily available in my area for very cheap out of early 00’s gm pickups. I would like to do a carb conversion with a 6014 MSD ignition system if I were to go that route, I just don’t see any talk of them. Pros and cons of a stock and/or mild builds is what I’m hoping to find. Just asking around because I’m fairly new to the derby world and don’t want to get myself into something that would be a complete waste of time. I do have an ‘86 305 and a ‘79 2 bolt main 350, just trying to test the waters on something a little different. Thanks in advance guys.

There’s nothing wrong with that setup at all. If you’re new to the sport I would run one of your other engines an utilize the thousand bucks for other parts needed . By the time you buy the box intake headers an carb . You could have had tires an a slider or pedals or other parts necessary. If you already have those things an want to run the LS that is a good platform IMO

LS is a great platform, cheap, plentiful, good power. I would usually recommend going through them like any other traditonal motor. Personal preference if I have the intake off to put a carb one on ill pull the heads, put new head gaskets and bolts in (ARP), make sure your oil pickup is good, replace the o ring on pickup if necessary, block off the water pump (talked in detail on the LS thread). Usually I can have it done in a day from pulled out of truck to ready to bolt tranny up.
