Im building a homemade cable shifter. I bought the cable, heims, and spring plunger from McMaster. My question is, on the NLR type shifters, do they have detents for each gear built into shifter or will the handle move freely back and forth when not hooked up to trans? Thanks

Detents aren't needed. I've made 4. No problems out of them.

I agree on the fact they don’t need the detents. I made one 3 years ago and imo it’s better than ones people sell today.

That’s exactly right. Drive is forward and reverse is back. It never bumps out of gear
