Its actually Rotella oil and yes we have used it for years in all our tractors and have had no problems at all.

Although I haven't used any of new "gas formulated" Rotella, we've always used Rotella 15-40 in trucks and tractors. Hell, me and lincoln used to run it in our derby motors. Rotella is pretty synonymous with big diesel engine oil, so I'm sure any of their oil is of good quality.

I rebuilt a sbc 400 for my k10 with a flat tappet cam. A very reputable engine builder told me to use in my engine. All the oils today have too many detergents (or something to that effect) and will wipe out a cam in no time. The rotella doesn't have all the additives in it.

It’s not the additives wiping out your cams it’s the lack of zinc in today’s oil.
Zinc helps the oil “stick” to the engine parts

Rotella doesen't quite have the additives it used to have , The zinc & phoshporous levels have dropped for the clean air act. Lucas has a pre 2007 Diesel oil with the good stuff left in it.

Im not going to try an lie about what the numbers exactly were, but when Rotell switched to CK-4 standard I called them and I want to say they had 1200ppm of ZDDP in their 15w40 conventional T4 and synthetic 5W40 and then I called Comp cams and they said that their bare minimum was 1200 PPM. Dont yell at me if my exact number is wrong, but I do remember that Comps bare minimum was the same as CK-4 diesel oil.

Dont yell at me if my exact number is wrong, but I do remember that Comps bare minimum was the same as CK-4 diesel oil. Was COMP referring to break in period or continual running? This is why there is break in oils that are supposed to be used during that first 30 min to hour of run time with varying RPM, extra zinc in the additive package for break in oils like Lincoln stated helps the oil stick to the cam as there is high wear during initial stages as the wear pattern is established and surfaces harden. Typically break in oils will have high phosphorus as well for lubricity. IF you don't have proper oil properties at break in I've heard of cams getting wiped out in a mater of 15 min, this is also a reasoning for a quality cam manufacturer as they do have metallurgy and grind finishes that help keep from this. To the question at hand, for newer vehicles I'm a fan of the synthetics, they were designed with tight tolerances and premium materials to take advantage of synthetic oils, Mobil 1 is typically my go to haven't tried the rotella gas stuff yet . If I'm putting in something older gas (tractor, lawnmower, vehicle, etc.) usually go with a conventional or maybe syn-blend.

bluecrew72 Continual running, not break in. Thats why I called them just make see if I was being "safe" to still run Rotella. Definitely with all the horror stories out there about wiping new cams out in a matter of minutes I would only use a break in oil designed specifically for cams anymore.
