What is everyone’s ideal engine and engine power?
I know for a lot of the old school drivers and builders, power is not important, I myself feel that same way.
With that being said, I want something capable of moving my cars out of the way of the competition. Obviously gears and type of transmission come into play as well.
I see big HP engines getting hot way to often due to people running them very hard. I am curious to what everyone has to say.

I have never run anything with more power then a 1976 Impala with a 350 would have made. I haven't ever wished for more either. If you want to push cars, there is no substitute for gearing in my opinion. When I ran a class that allowed gears, I ran in the mid 5 range, friends of mine ran 6.0-6.5 ish gear ratios

I think if you have big HP motor its not going to last as long. If you have it you are going to run the balls off it. I run 355 Chevy 292 cam an 3spd

Really up to personal preference and budget but sbc is the way to go, you can build a good ford engine but parts are more expensive and derby parts are limited. In general a good 350/355 tuned right is hard to beat in all forms weather it be on the stock end or fully built. Also what do you want out of it, little torque monster or big boy power plant (not necessary in 99% of situations). Looking at a big show for example, most people are running built 355’s. On a personal level, we have the full range as far as sbc’s go. Several stock 350’s/355’s, a mild built 355 that makes somewhere in the 300’s for hp, a fully built sbc 383 that makes around 500hp, and a fully built sbc 421 that makes around 700hp. I’m going to have a 383 or 358 (haven’t decided yet) built. In addition, what are your abilities and or access? Will you be building the engine or do you have a builder? Then it goes to what is your builder most comfortable with? Many variables but it all starts with what do you want and what’s your budget? Horse power isn’t nearly as important in this sport as others. Where we run tracks are usually hard with good traction and pushing other cars is fairly important, yes u can change gears to get the same result but wheel speed is nice

I actually just purchased a new Colyer Performance 305...
He said he thinks it is making roughly 300 HP, but the amount of run time he has on them is outrageous.
I think it’ll be plenty for me.
I have ran a bone stock 305 with a 3 speed before and was still able to compete have plenty enough power with a good set of gears.

I straight laugh my butt off when I see a 10 grand plus motor puke. I will never understand why blow that much money just to be the loudest one in the pit ? or they burn up a tranny from to high of a stall. Horsepower does not win, nice reliable motor, tranny, rearend do the job just fine. this is a very good example: dear friend of mine ran a straight 6 banger in a roundback wagon just cause he could or to be different/he finished in the money.

I have a couple different set ups but my 245hp full roller will run forever and sounds like it has a lot just cause it runs good and revs fast...

A motor that runs cool will be hard to beat over a motor that has alot of horsepower in a long feature most of the time. It's all personal preference.

If you have it, you'll use it. Having a high HP motor is much harder on equipment and you're likely to drive more aggressive. It's a vicious cycle so keep that in mind.

I’ve got a 420 hp 355 and love the thing. Derby’s here are about 10-25 minutes long. It’s a perfect motor for the derby’s out west
