Having an argument with a few other drivers I hang around with. Is it bad for derby engines to sit around for a year or so then use em again? I say it’s not bad for em, but they say otherwise.

I left one sit in the garage for 8 years no issues with it. I work at a salvage yard and have sold engines that have sat for 20 years and didn't have any issues. If it was good when you put it in storage it will be fine when it comes out. That is if it doesn't get moisture in the cylinders.

Before letting one sit up I use fogging oil on it. If I get an engine I might care about that has been sitting I fill cylinders with marvels for a couple days and then rotate over by hand a few dozen revolutions.

Sitting causes valve springs to collapse or not have the same spring rate as before. And rings can rust to the cylinder walls. How much of that happens in a year. IDK.

When we put the cars up for their winter nap, make sure that anti-freeze is in radiator. I also pour a little transmission fluid down carb while its idling, till the smoke show starts, IMO this coats inside of engine to prevent rusting. In Va.we have very humid days where everything sweats. If moisture gets in the cylinders, and it sweats, you know that's not good. Next year, pick any of the 8 cars and they fire right up and run just like previous year. Also add Sta-bil to fuel to keep carb healthy.

Just took one that I had sitting for 12 years and put it in a newer cady. Won with it last night. I would say no problem letting them sit. All I did was put antifreeze in it to store it.

I've always fogged them down with trans fluid, pulled the plugs and put some oil in the cyls, and backed off the rocker arms. Works for me

Never heard about valve springs collapsing, like Stromi mentioned above. That's a good idea to back off nuts and readjust next time you fire up.

This mostly depends on the environment it's stored in. IF it's in a fluctuate temperature and humid area, that will be much more detrimental than a 70 degree controlled garage. Rust happens quickly on bare metal surfaces putting it at risk of spinning bearings. As for collapsed valve springs, its reasonable in theory, but think about how many 40+ engines are out there with the valves squashed and do just fine. I think its more about the conditions its place in then it is about the sit time. Ideally, fog it down, back the valve springs off and put it in a dry environment.

The valve spring issue will also depend on if its stock or stiff aftermarket and or small lift cam or a high lift radical cam.

I'm guessing a carb issue that it wouldn't stay running?
