Currently we run two classes: 1. Compact - any 105.5" and under 2. Midsize - 116" unibody fwd and 108" rwd/AWD I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, depends on area, situation and build rules. We expanded to allow bigger fwd midsize to get more cars per local drivers' requests. Right...promoter has to consider what's gonna pull in the most cars in a 100 or 200 mile radius & roll with it. In an area where counts have been dwindling for over a decade, we have a relatively new promoter in the area who is quite proactive & spends a lot of off time talking with drivers, new and old, and guess what....his shows are growing.

Back in the day a Compact around here by most county fair rules 104'w/b 4cyl only. 1 other promotor had 103' w/b with 4or 6 cyl rules but would let V-8 AMC's run with the Compacts, I show up with a 104' w/b Volvo wagon and they want to put me in with the full size cars. REALLY ? V-8's can run but not 1 inch more w/b

Theres gunna be debate on this till the end of time, our local deal just says 4/6 only and a wheelbase limit. Everyone shit when my cousin rolled out 2 v6 gbody this year, ran them both 2x and only 1 win and a 2nd. Best bet people are changing the rules though still

If the people running against G body knows them or just looks at it right they would straight waste it. Our G body is on 11 runs but not your stock G body. It's got a lot of work done where it needs it. The rules you got for wheelbase an motor is what we got an a lot around us got. It's the best ones out there for the cars we all run.

^^^^Exactly. My 97" 2.3 Gremlin has been holding up against 108" cars with assorted engine sizes for 13 runs now.

104.5 unless you swapped ball joints isn’t it? lol 104.3 actually....well that's what I've heard. Next year it passed tech and the lower ball joint's "accidently" got mixed up.

I'm a firm believer in its not the size of the car it's how you use it😂, all jokes aside at least in my neck of the woods amc's and mustangs tend to dominate the track even though rules allow a 108" fwd. Not to say w-bodys aren't hard but I prefer a well built car with 2 usable ends and a killer drivetrain over a 1 ended car with an ok drivetrain

I helped put on a couple stock compact shows for a local VFD, and I made the rules any FWD except Eldorado/toranados and put a 107.5 limit on RWD to keep out the G bodies. I know the G bodies are weaker than W body, however due to then actually having a frame vs unibody I didnt want to deal with the debate with anyone.

G bodies require a LOT of mods to be any harder than even a Chevette or Cavalier. With our rules here, it would be more like a whole lot of not getting caught. I got no qualms taking a Gremlin or Mustang or Camry headon with a G body.
With no Eldos or Toros, I guess it'd have to be an early 80's Rivi.

rules around me are compacts is v6 106" and under any 4cyl cannot swap motors unless its the same motor. we have midsize class of any v6 no motor swaps unless same motor. and fullzie cars is any v6 and v8.

I never understand why there would be a shorter wheelbase limit for rwd than fwd. What 108”-109” rwd car is so much harder than a w body, or even a pacer for that matter... I both agree and disagree. 108-109" not really a difference. Get into bigger wheelbases then there's a huge difference. Take a 90s front wheel drive car like Buick Park Ave which has like 114" wheelbase, but is weaker then a W-body. I have no problem letting them run against midsize cars. Then think that a 73-77 Cutlass is 112" or a 60s T-bird is 113". I honestly don't think those are even comparable cars.

Where i'm from, we run all types of cars together. However, we are not allowed full frame cars so everyone has somewhat of an even chance. This does work better with a very stock class as our rules allow no strengthening of the car at all so i can't comment on a more mod class.

This has been debated often but there will never be a gold standard that fits everywhere or forever. Wheelbase changes with rules and times. With that being said, local promoter has chosen to nix rwd, I'd like to wheel base changed to ANY FWD unibody in that case. Theres some interesting options above 108" I'd like to try out. And of course, a northstar caddy for s&g.
