^Appreciate it. That's what all I had presumed but never fully researched. I'm looking into building a 31 spline truck 9 for a caddy only because my rules wont allow upper trailing arm brackets to be moved on the car, but can add ears to an axle.

If you're gonna do it, I would for sure do a 9" with 12 bolt gm axles. If you are keeping it stock.

Love all the input guys. He’s is sticking with. We are not allowed aftermarket axles. So that sucks. Currently it’s not a nodular and the axles are 28 spline. He doesn’t run stupid HP motor so he’s not to hard em. Hoping this stock setup will last for a bit until he can build a better one. Thanks for all the help. 28 spline axles break like glass at the end of the splines. Needs to be very aware of axle shots coming and getting off the gas. Make sure he runs good back brakes so he can stop the spinning tire fast. I wouldnt be putting heavy diggers on.

Hell I've run 9 inches all my derby career. 28 spline aren't that bad. just brace them up a bit. and never put a mini spool in them because they'll break. Always go full spool with them. Hell I don't know how many runs I have on one of my 28 splines with 5.13 gears and stock everything else. I've been impressed with them.

10/12 hybrids or more popular now because they are a direct bolt in rearend that has better axles and center section from the get go.
A 9” you have to fab to convert to coils and you still have a mediocre center and axles.
GM 31 spline axles are far superior to either 9” axle.
A stock 9” will break axles, dump the yoke, or break carrier caps.
Another thing is bolt pattern. If you’re running aftermarket centers, the 5.5 bolt pattern gets out there pretty close to your weld area.
If it’s what you have, run It but don’t be over confident in it.

I like the price of nine inch rear ends, both as an assembly, and spool/ gear cost. As far as using the stock axles go, I hate the 28 spline axles. Just not good for demo use, and the fact that all of the ones I ran had two different length axles made it even more of a pain. I broke one or both the two times I ran them.

ive ran 9in and never had a prob back when I ran fords and all my friends still run them in their fords. 31 spline with 410 and 538 gears. nice thing about the 31 spline 9in is that 410s are ez to find and cheap (the old ford half ton pickups and broncos came with them) if you want gears on a budget ready to go no set up required. and if you have a bit of cash step up to the 35 spline axles and you'll never have a problem. i'm ordering these cut to length 35 spline axles for my dodge 8 3/4 but they work in 9in too. www.muddywheel1.com/chrysler_875_inch_axle_shaft_35_spline_22_318_inch_triple_drilled_nitro_gear_and_axle

Bought a 9”. Just trying to identify the carrier. It has the ribbing that resembles a nodular but on the front it has a Y casting in it. Is this a good strong carrier or is it junk??
