Everyone is running 10/12 hybrids. Why not a 9”? What’s wrong with them? Seems like a good choice since it has bolt in axles.

Lots of people like them, especially when u build a fully built 9 inch with 40 spline axles, but for shows where you aren’t allowed axle savers and what not a hybrid is nice since you don’t have to change some of the seals u have to change every time in a 9 inch.

Just trying to justify them. My boy bought one and he’s taking flack for not going 10 bolt. I told him to go 9” and now I feel guilty. Maybe it was a bad choice.

No definitely a good choice, we have ran in the past. Lots of people like them, not sure why he would be taking flak necessarily

9 inch is probably the second most common, hybrid being first, 14 bolts probably third

We got 5 9 inches, one 10 volt with strange axles,2 yota 8 inches an 3 14 bolts. So you can see we favor our nine inchs. Drive line brakes are much easier on 9inch then 10 bolt if you swap gears depending on the tracks.
Give the boy some gears an tell him to let it eat.

I know some guys complain about breaking the caps too.
Honestly I think alot depends on what you're doing with them.

Ive broke several stock 9" rears. The axles seem to just snap in half, where as gm axles tend to bend or twist.
I've broke the carrier caps holding the differential in place. Which also destroyed the gears. The housings aren't all that tough, if you do a coil spring conversion, plate the top of the housing before welding the ears on. Early on I ripped the top of the housing back.. Could look through the package tray and see the gears.
I had Woodrow build me a 40 spline 9". That was 6 years ago, it's still being ran

Love all the input guys. He’s is sticking with. We are not allowed aftermarket axles. So that sucks. Currently it’s not a nodular and the axles are 28 spline. He doesn’t run stupid HP motor so he’s not to hard em. Hoping this stock setup will last for a bit until he can build a better one. Thanks for all the help.

Or if you do break one, can you just toss one on from another axle, or are they machined to a specific carrier?

There isn't any mod I've found to improve the factory design. On the gm and some Ford rearends you can buy an aftermarket cover with studs that stick through on the inside and add extra support for the caps.
They are similar to an engine main cap, they are machined to a particular rearend and carrier. Plus the 9" has the threaded adjusters I don't think it would work switching caps anyway
Best off to upgrade to a nodular. Can find a factory nodular one but they are rare and expensive or can just buy an aftermarket and won't have to worry about it.
Or you can just get a complete stock 3rd memeber and replace your broken one. They are cheap and easy to come by.
