There's some pretty new cars for the time out there As I remember, there were a lot of 6 year old cars being wrecked back then. Ya gotta remember that cars weren't kept as long as they are now. A car with 75k on it was getting towards the end of its useful life. Junk cars that ran and drove were plentiful and cheap. All you had to do to get a car on the track was strip the glass; chain the hood, doors and trunk; and maybe move the gas tank and battery. Very few guys were even thinking about bypassing shift linkage, rewiring ignition or doing body bolts. Very different times indeed. Very true. Classic driving style here, too. Took more skill and concentration using the rear end of the car primarily. The other thing to remember regarding the cars, this was at the end of the energy crisis/stagflation economic period. Big, thirsty cars which were new just a few years earlier were quickly being eschewed en masse, helping to create the glut of cheap derby-eligible vehicles.
