The first derby I saw was in '81, so this is what stuff looked like back then. If you look closely, you'll see a pterodactyl fly over in the 2nd heat.
Beauty contest around 3:00 Action starts around 15:00
Much different driving style.

There's some pretty new cars for the time out there As I remember, there were a lot of 6 year old cars being wrecked back then. Ya gotta remember that cars weren't kept as long as they are now. A car with 75k on it was getting towards the end of its useful life. Junk cars that ran and drove were plentiful and cheap. All you had to do to get a car on the track was strip the glass; chain the hood, doors and trunk; and maybe move the gas tank and battery. Very few guys were even thinking about bypassing shift linkage, rewiring ignition or doing body bolts. Very different times indeed.

At what point did people start seeing the value in +74 cars (meaning the bumpers on them)

At what point did people start seeing the value in +74 cars (meaning the bumpers on them) Probably in the mid-late '90's, when the internet ruined everything. /last part of that is sarcasm But, yeah. I'm not sure when guys started traveling to get cars, probably widespread in the 90's, especially in road salt states once the better cars were getting harder to find. Those old iron GM's were pretty much a dime a dozen. I don't know how old you are, but these cars were *everywhere* up into the '90's. A lotta stuff with life still in it got crushed because it was easier to run another car than fix it. When I started running in '92, I had access to a few salvages. Most running, driving full size cars were $150 and below for whatever they had on hand, whether it was old iron, metric GM or whatever. Hell... I remember seeing Wes Whittaker running ads in some of the Auto Buyer type magazines looking for cars.

Are you surprised? Did you see how long it took for them to throw the red flag after the rollover?

Are you surprised? Did you see how long it took for them to throw the red flag after the rollover? Yes, I was surprised. I began going to derbies in that same year, 1980, and even then an unassisted DD hit got one disqualified.
