NOTE THIS WAS IN THE FIGURE 8 SECTION BUT NO ONE GOES THERE I DON'T THINK SO MOVED FOR MORE TRAFFIC Now I have have been running demolition derbies since 2004 and have never ran a figure 8 car. I figured I would give it a shot since regular derby has been getting kinda boring to me. I have a 73 monte carlo that I was building into a derby car that will now be a figure 8 car. It will be wire class so it has to be some what stockish. I shortened it 4 inches and hard nosed the bumper. I am not done with my cage but I will have a four point cage with 4 down bars and a halo bar. Not sure what else to do to the car. I know how to build a derby car so I will do all of that stuff strength wise but what should I do to make it handle. Brakes, steering, gears, etc. A buddy of mine said not to use back brakes but that didn't make sense to me. Anyway any help is appreciated.

Is it a flat track or banked corners?

I would definitely swap to a much stiffer spring to help with cornering if you hadn't already.

Yes stiffer springs will keep it from rolling the body over when cornering.
I think Landshark is referring to put some more camber like this / \ so that way when you corner the outside tire gets more traction when the weight transfers over and flattens it out.

Makes sense I suppose, I used to race 4 bangers on dirt but wasn't any good at it LOL. I used to put a lot of camber then but it was always to the left.

The 28 spline 10 bolt axles in these cars are super weak. You'd really want to change to something stronger, same reason as derbies.
You'll want to know what kind of rear gear everyone is running, that is key to staying in the pack. If it's like the video I'd bet they are running 3.73's or 4.11 in 2nd gear with a Th350. Your 73 likely has 3.08 or 2.73 and you'll be too high. You might get away with 1st gear. Gearing is huge.
Do a rear trunk frame chop of 12 inches if that's allowed as this will really help with handling - quite common with the figure 8 guys- you see it with those outlaws in the video.
You can do a spring kick if you want to use the stock spring. Just weld a nut in the lower control arm valley and put the spring in cock'd. This will help with height and stiffen it up in the front. Check to make sure the shock fits if you kick the spring. Other wise shortened truck springs work well. For the dirt track, the stock spring might be right.
Change the sway bar bushings and bolt.
I'd use all 4 brakes
Definitely over chamber- usually taking all the shims out is enough
Use good tires and shocks.
The steering on these cars are decent as is.
Good luck and have fun

Good luck and have fun I have a 12 bolt BIA out of a 73 olds to put in it but wasn't sure what gear to run. I found a set of 4.56s that I was going to drop in the axle for 100 bucks. I will be running a 283 engine with mild cam and a turbo 400 trans. Tires I am planning or running skids on the back and fork tires on the front. I will probably double my springs front and back to stiffen it up and will put in camber. I am not allowed to shorten the back of the car in wire class so body is pretty much stock. I will move motor back as far as possible most likely. It has front and rear sway bars so that should definitely help.
